Do different phase cars have different size fuel caps??

Bough one off ebay and its way to thick to get in the filler neck, so are the different sizes or does mine have a different filler neck?

Yes, the later cars have a narrower filler neck, and the earlier a larger IIRC, or vice versa!!

Five doors also have different deeper caps.

Later cars have a narrower neck to prevent leaded fuel to go in. Cars on unleaded fuels have a narrower neck.

Presumably "later cars" means phase 2 cars? I have recently used the cap off a phase 1 junior on my phase 1.5CTI without giving it a moment's thought! The caps from GSF make a satiscraptory temporary job and they are quite cheap. Be aware that they look *nothing* like the original cap though!

I thought only the cat-equiped cars had a different filler neck, as putting leaded in one would destroy the cat?

I've got a ph1.5 cap on my ph2, although it's a very early ph2 so maybe they hadn't changed yet.

Does the narrower neck appear to have a cast piece added? My cti had this and I when changed the lockset the cap didn't fit. I just twisted the added bit off by inserting the end of an adjustable spanner in it and the "older" style cap fitted straight on

I think that's the reason too.
