Bigger Throttle Body For An Mi16 ... Once Again.

Recommended Posts

Dandu

Hi mates,

recently I got in trouble with my throttle body. While I was thinking about a replacement, I remembered someone who was able to install a bigger throttle body (originating from a BMW 3.5L) at his Gutmann inlet manifold. Is anybody familiar with that modification? Is it easily possible to replace the older (and smaller) 8V throttle body with a bigger one without changing the inlet port of the manifold. I suppose, it might be increased. On the other hand i'd like to know, if the ECU is able to handle the bigger need for fuel. Does it automatically adjust the injection cycle? Perhaps I should mention, that I plan to replace the old AFM with a proper bigger one (from a BMW 3.5L) as well.

The AFM will automaticly sense if more air is entering the engine, so it'll get the correct amount of fuel.

I put on a throttlebody from a Vauxhall/Opel 3.0 inline 6 engine.

But it wasn't a straight fit at all.. Actually a bad fit :)

So had an adapterplate machined and bolted that to the inlet, and then bolted the throttlebody to the adapterplate.

Did you apply the Jetronic, too? Did your ECU get in trouble with the new AFM? Did you actually apply another AFM? If not, it should be a restriction, shouldn't it?

Building an adapter plate might not be easy but possible. But getting a proper (bigger) throttle body - especially the AFM - seems to be the harder job. Did you recognise a difference between the usual 8v setup and your opel-setup - according the responsiveness of the engine, bhp, torque etc? I mean, did the bigger airflow result in a positive effect?

Thanks for your help!

Bye Dandu

We ran the standard Motronic Mi16 loom + ecu.. AFM ++

All was standard Mi16 spec.

Due to the big throttle there was harder to adjust the throttle to slow cruising, not a big problem at we drove almost only @ WOT or with no throttle at all :)

Not sure if the throttle did any difference, as it was the only throttle we ever used with the Gutmann manifold.
