Veero 1 Posted June 26, 2006 (edited) I have dropped my rad to accomodate the Mi inlet manifold but it still clonks it I think and looks damn close. So have been recommended something like this: http://www.nfauto.co.uk/cooling_fans.htm 12" I believe. Has anyone used these or had any experience of them? Going to fabricate some new rad mounting brackets to really get it down and out the way of the inlet this weekend and completely do away with the fan cowling thingy, which has a lot of room for air flow improvement I reckon. Cheers lads Veero Edited June 26, 2006 by Veero
Jonmurgie 2 Posted June 27, 2006 I'm going to be using something like that... and for a 205 rad you will only need a 10" as the 12" won't fit
d-9 0 Posted June 27, 2006 Got one of them on my xsaiiii and its great, really neat solution (apart from where the stupid janspeed melted the fan clips :@)
newdean0 0 Posted June 27, 2006 I've made up some brackets for the radiator on my mi and done away with the cowling too. I made up a bracket though to mount the existing fan onto the front of the radiator. I had a problem because the plastic cowling braces the slam panel, mine now flexes instead of the bonnet shutting so some bracing still needs to be added. I've also still got to make up a couple of extra brackets for the front grill.
Veero 1 Posted June 28, 2006 Ah that sounds like a plan. Save me £50 odd at this stage. Could you describe the brackets at all? I was tihnking of buying a couple of those house radiator mounting brackets (like Dreamweaver has done IIRC) and modding them to actually support the radiator itself, but how did you chop out the standard fan and mount it to the rad? The cowling does indeed seem to brace the slam panel but the bonnet pin spring catch thing is adjustable if you undo the locknut and unscrew the pin a few turns, I had to do this after I initially modded the rad fan cowling. Although mounting the grill shouldnt be a problem since it screws onto the slam panel at the top and has the 2 location dowels behind the bumper I thought Veero
d-9 0 Posted June 28, 2006 The two location dowels for the grille go into the fan cowling, needs a couple of brackets making up. The fan is easy to remove from the cowling...you undo 3 screws. Crossheads I belive. The brackets are ally C shaped bits with holes that the pegs at the bottom of the rad sits into, these are bolted to the crossmember, iirc one hole had to be drilled for these. The top of the rad is currently held by cable ties. The fan bracket dean has made is like a huge C, that hooks over the lip at the bottom of the rad and clamps onto the rad at the top using a couple of bolts. A better fan bracket is like the one on Rich(?)'s mi16, it screwed onto the brackets that the bumper is screwed onto and ran behind the bumper, with a support welded onto that which came up and onto the front of the slam panel for support (adjusting that screw on the bonnet will probably just change the shutlines)
Veero 1 Posted June 28, 2006 Yes the bonnet is a few mm too high but that's the only way to close it currently due to the extra flex in the slam panel, the pin on the bonnet would hit the top of the rad before the catch had engaged. Ah yeah the grill mounts are indeed on the cowling, to drop the rad currently Ive chopped the rad support pegs off so the cowling is in fact pretty much in its original position. Hmmm looks to be a fun weekend in the garage... Veero
newdean0 0 Posted June 29, 2006 I'll take some pictures of the brackets this weekend, I'm going to make some brackets up which clamp the radiator to the underside of the slam panel. This should hopefully locate the radiator at the top, replacing the bodged cable ties and prevent the slam panel from flexing so much. I still reckon I'll need to beef the slam panel up though, I currently have to use a pry bar on the inlet manifold to hold the slam panel up while I shut the bonnet. d-9 0 Posted June 29, 2006 Or you could come to the house party, get arseholed and forget about 205s for a bit. I'll bring your AFM to the party btw, seems to ahve a slightly lumpy idle but fairly happy.
newdean0 0 Posted July 3, 2006 Here's the pics of my fan and radiator mounts as it's easier than describing them. Bottom mountings: The fan bracket: Radiator top locating bracket:
