Veero 1 Posted June 26, 2006 Drivers side outer CV has a pin hole in it which is gradually squeezing the grease out. I plan to replace it this weekend and would obviously prefer not to have to change the shaft and bugger about with gearbox oil etc since it's only done 1000 miles. Where can I get a CV boot kit from? How much are they? Are they generally reliable aftewards? I'm guessing it's not a rocket science job, just a little awkward and messy. Anything I should watch out for? Im fairly competent with a spanner, just rebuilt and fitted the Mi so this should be fine. Thanks Veero
pugrallye 0 Posted June 26, 2006 (edited) cost about 5 quid for a boot kit, as you say not rocket science just really messy, can be obtained from any motor factors for this price, and they are normally stocked as they are a very common size. Perfectly reliable, when you knock outer cv joint off keep joint straight and it should come stright off with a well hit blow, best off using the metal straps that come in the kit as they tighten down better than trying to use cable ties or similar, so make sure you have a beefy pair of side cutters or simliar to tighten up the metal straps (there are specifically designed pliers for the job but as long as your careful, you shouldnt need them) Edited June 26, 2006 by pugrallye

Arches get REALLY messy if the boot comes undone! maybe worth asking a local garage for a price.
d-9 0 Posted June 26, 2006 Do it sooner rather than later, cleaning that s*it off your hubs/wheels/calipers isnt fun. Kennys or partco are your best bet. Isnt really hard, just pull the driveshaft out of the hub, undo the clips, pull the end of the shaft, tap out the 3 pointed thingy off, taking care not to drop the round bearing bits and then the needles all over the floor, pull boot off, slide new one on, etc.
Veero 1 Posted June 26, 2006 Yep, it's on the cards for this weekend, along with making new rad support brackets so it clears the inlet by a couple inches rather than the 2mm it currently does, and fitting my coilovers Veero
pug_ham 244 3 Cars Posted June 27, 2006 I've got a cone stretching tool for just this job. A new stretchy AMK boot with grease & clips was £4.50 & it took an hour to do start to finish. I lent this to TonyGTi a month or so ago & we couldn't see how to split the outer CV joint fron the driveshaft as they had supplied him a non-stretchy boot kit so the cone was no good. He took the boot back & changed it for the stretchy one & afaik the job was a doddle. Graham.
Veero 1 Posted June 28, 2006 TBH I would much perfer a stretchy one, saves dismantling the joint which Im not too keen on trying especially not having a spare D/S to hand... Veero
pug_ham 244 3 Cars Posted June 29, 2006 Part number of AMK stretchy boot is "Flexiboot, CBK 24". Graham.
Veero 1 Posted June 29, 2006 Part number of AMK stretchy boot is "Flexiboot, CBK 24". Graham. Cheers Graham Any decent motor factor sell this or a Pug only job? Also how much is the cone tool? I remember seeing one in a factors and thinking thats a funny looking thing Always useful to have to hand I guess and if the kit is only £4.50 Ill get 2 in case the other decides to depart this world anytime soon. pug_ham 244 3 Cars Posted June 30, 2006 Any decent motor factors should, thats where I get mine from for that price, same place as I got my cone tool (£6 iirc, certainly less than £10). As if Pug would have something so vital for so little. Graham.
