Loud Exhaust Questions

Recommended Posts

coombsfh

I am enjoying my new GTI immensely and I like the sound it makes but it is just too loud. I have a decent stereo but it cant be heard over the hilariously loud exhaust note.

It is a janspeed back box with everything else original (or so i believe). Is there any way to pack the exhaust to make it more muffled? Is the noise level 90 dB?

Are the Magnex exhausts worth the extra outlay or is an original backbox the way to go?

Also do perished breather pipes mean anything or is it ok to drive it as is?

Any help is much appreciated as usual,

Many thanks,

Fred

The 205 gti exhaust system is very good as standard and if you are just replacing the back box you are unlikely to see any noticable performance increases and potentially decreases. The full magnex system i.e. 4 branch manifold, centre section and backbox, is proven to work well, expecially with tuned engines and mi16's etc, they're not stupidly loud either.

TBH, if you want to hear your music, just replace with a standard backbox and you will be fine. I'm assuming your car is unmodified. Another good system is the Pug sport Grp N system. This uses the standard 205 manifold and downnpipe from a 3 piece (early 205) system, a straight through centre section and a grp N backbox which isn't stainless. It's not a bad price and sounds good if that's your thing. Use the search tool and read up on the various different systems available as most people on here have experience of one or more systems.

Depends how perished your breather pipes are really. If they're cracked then they can introduce air leaks and bad idling characteristics as unmetered air can then freely be sucked in. They're quite expensive to replace if i recall.

The breather lines are cracked almost all the way through.

I will hunt some exhaust info.

Thanks for your help.
