Valve Stem Seals Renewal

Am gonna be stripping down a couple of heads for the 205 n 405 & I know that there is a way to get the valve seals off without any effort as they are in a deep recess.

Any help or tips would be great

Also Does anyone know Of the best head set to get ie make or where from & also a cambelt tensioner also & ruff prices thanks.

i just used a pair of long nosed pliers on mine , a couplr came apart but didn't really have any trouble with them or do any damage.

may well be an easier way tho

Only easier way I know is proper stem seal pliers, I got mine off with some skinny pliers (needle nose were too thin for me) but I have been warned that this can damage the guides.

 

If you do use the pliers use a twisting motion with a light grip to get them off, not just pull like f***!!

I'de get a proper stem seal pliers for 3 reasons:

 

1.) The seals have a shoulder which is very difficult to grip unless you hook in behind it (which the stem seal pliers are shaped to do). Just gripping a stubborn seal hard enough on the metal bit can distort/break the tops of the guides.

2.) Grabbing around inside the tappet bore with a set of pliers has potential to do damage if you slip off and hit the sides.

3.) They're pretty cheap, I think around £12 or so; if you're doing 2 heads they will be worth it.

 

Saying that I did mine with a pair of needlenose pliers I had modified so they could hook round behind the seal and protected the tappet bores by lining them with an old rubber glove for when I slipped off (some seals needed quite a lot of force to remove).
