Replacing Switches For Toggle Ones

Recommended Posts

does anyone know if it is possible to replace the hazard and rear fog light switches for toggle ones , or any other simple design switches .

i have got rid of the rear screen one as i am getting a plastic rear window, but want to simplify the look of my dash ,

i recently changed from phase 1 switches to phase 2 and that was taxing enough as none of the wires were correctly numbered . is there an easy way to change to toggles ?

I had my hazard switch out yesterday - given the fact that the connector at the back has got at least 6 wires going into it, and that they are presumably all needed (!), then replacing it with a toggle switch seems unlikely to me....

Yes it is easy if you figure out what does what. I think part of the reason for the 6 wires on a hazard is that they are illuminated at night and also then have a bright light when activated. There will only be 2 wires that do the switch part.

Try the likes of AB Motorsport or one of the other competition places to see if they do a blanking plate you can drill your switches into

Alternatively, if they are phase 2 switches on a phase 2 switch surround, then just get the blanking ones from a 106 and fill in the hole! They are only about 60p or something each! CTI's also have these as there is no heated rear screen.

I haven't had a good look at them but of course it is possible, dunno if it is worth doing.

Also I think the rear fog light may have to have a illuminated 'on' indicator to pass an MOT, not sure tho'

like i said, i have already lost the rear screen switch so i will need to re arrange the dash for the missing switch anyway and i was going to use sheet alu to blank it off .

i will probably use an in line warning light to tell when its on ( that is all the mot requires, as i couldn't get my current hazard to light when on and put a bulb in the dash as a bodge  )

i will also be fitting cut off's etc so it will be in keeping with the theme for track use

i guess its just pick and hope then ! and you think it will be just two wires for the hazards ?, i can understand that for the rear fog as it is a simple operation

we wil see, i can see a few blow fuses :D

I reckon so as the flashing is controlled by a relay, not the switch

I wouldn't be surprised if there is more to it than that actually. I know that the hazard switch forms part of the indicator circuit, unplug it and the indicators dont work! the switch can also fail causing the indicators to stop working even though the hazards will still work fine...

yeah i found that when wiring it up for the phase 2 switch i missed a wire and on one side the hazards didnt work but the other worked ok , i may well leave it for now and have a play about when i can get a box of fuses togther , there must be some way around it ,there always is on a 205 :)

Absolutely, you will only have one wire to control the 'lights on' circuit. The 'Dimming' of the switch is controlled by an inline resistor that is integral to the switch. As JH says the Hazard Switch forms part of the indicator circuit and is responsible for the indicators not working in so many situations  .

Get the whole hazard/indicator circuit down on paper, peugeot don't make it easy and haynes aren't much help either but it's not impossible. Then you can work out a way to seperate the two enough to over come the issues whilst still performing the needed functions. Get hold of some illuminating toggle switches, replace the entire switch panel with an alu plate, and fit the switches in the plate. Just an idea anyway

just got the hazard wiring diagram down trying to figure out what wires to join and what to ditch:

diagram

what do you think?

it looks like i can get rid of the orange wire ( 55c)

join the pink (40) and the purple ( 49)? as one side of the switch.

join the red(29a) and the brown ( 50 ) , to provide power to the relay

the blue (72) would be the other side of the switch

and possibly ditch the grey(m29) and the green (10)

or do i want to keep the battery + to the relay and ditch the switched live?

my head hurts :P

time for a beer :D
