Oil Pressure

Recommended Posts

i've got a 91 xu9ja (205). my problem is that the oil pressure is ok when the engine is started, bout half gauge, when thw engine is cold but when the engine is hot, even after only 5-10 minutes the oil pressure drops to the first white mark or lower and stays there, it's slightly of the bottom of the gauge (when ignition is turned of). i've just had the sump and oil pump of, chnged the oil and filter but to no avail. the oil pressure does stay at the bottom and the warning light doesn't come on even after 1-2 hours of driving. any ideas because i like to push my engine but am dubious about doing it with such low pressure. is it possible the pressure sender unit, if so where is it located. thanks

Yeah, I'd change the sender unit first of all and go from there.

The oil pressure sender is on the front of the engine, underneath the inlet manifold just to the right of the alternator. There's two senders - one for the gauge and one for the light - it's the larger mushroom shaped one that is for the gauge.

The other one is to check the infamous brown multiplug that is under the airflow meter as the connectors here get dirty and start reading all sorts of scary info! I drove gingerly for 1000 miles all the way back from France on the 205 Anniversary Tour in my 1.6 GTI (XU5JA) with slowly dropping oil pressure, only to find the bloody thing was just a dirty connector (after changing the oil and filter twice!) ;)

Mine generally sits just above the first white mark on warm idle, and just above half way (i.e.needle upright) when driving. That's an XU9JA ;)

pete c, thats the same as mine...ish. i'm assuming the gauge isn't zeroed correctly. i've cleaned the multi plug but to no avail. the light has never come on so i suppose a pressure check is the best assurance. thanks for the help.
