pug309twin40s 1 Posted June 19, 2006 (edited) following on from my other thread about headgasket going. well the headgasket wasnt the fault: http://homepage.ntlworld.com/pug309twin40s...ne/PHTO0005.JPG now what would cause this to happen? ive only managed about 1600miles since it was swapped over from the donor car and looking at the headgasket the engine has been apart not that long ago: http://homepage.ntlworld.com/pug309twin40s...ne/PHTO0008.JPG http://homepage.ntlworld.com/pug309twin40s...ne/PHTO0007.JPG im so annoyed and fedup now its not funny. Jonmurgie 2 Posted June 19, 2006 Not nice... and you need to practice your photography skills Did you have the engine appart before fitting it at all or just chuck it in?
pug309twin40s 1 Posted June 19, 2006 Not nice... and you need to practice your photography skills Did you have the engine appart before fitting it at all or just chuck it in? my camera is crap!! no didnt have the engine apart before swapping it over. did a compression test before removing it from the donor 309 and it had 200psi across all cylinders. futura 3 Posted June 21, 2006 Can't really see from the pics, is it cracked or badly scratched? If scratched then you piston is probably nackered too, looks like there was a bit of something (small stone?) that fell in the engine when being previously re-fitted

steve@cornwall 100 Posted June 21, 2006 Put a 1.9 in my old cti last year-suspected h/g so pulled the head off. Lo and behold, that too had a nearly new h/g fitted and a cracked no 1 liner. Made diagnoses easier on mine , it had bits of ring embedded in the piston and head! I think we both found out why our doners were available in the first place- new gaskets would indicate that these engines were investigated previously and sold on quickly. Gutted for you- mine was only a 1.9 swap but I still beat the block up with a big hammer!!!
Martin@PRD 0 Posted June 21, 2006 looks like someone ran the engine with no coolant in it!!

Miles 331 1 Cars Posted June 21, 2006 Seen loads like that, Age and being the weakest part of the liner doesn't help matters along with them being made out of cr*p metal. Even our Race 86.5 liners crack from time to time
KRISKARRERA 2 1 Cars Posted June 21, 2006 Something else to worry about now. Suddenly the various XU10 blocks will become more popular.

steve@cornwall 100 Posted June 22, 2006 Ever though of using bubble wrap bubble wrap is worth more than that bloody block!!! It took me 4 weeks finding the cause of massive overfuelling before it ran well enough to pronounce it dead I was considering using a 1.6 block and liners to repair it and suddenly thought "enough is enough" and conclusively ended any thoughts of wasting more time on it! Damn, it felt GOOD- which is what a hobby is for!
