Solid (i.e. Aluminium) Bottom Mount

Recommended Posts

Thinking of putting a stiffer bottom mount on my new engine but wanted to see what people thought of them? At the moment I have a Peugeot Sport GrpN one but after seeing the solid one on CRF450's engine and also coming across this on eBay it made me think about getting one made up by Forge:

I'm obviously going to be running some decent power now so I don't want to risk braking the next weakest point if the mount is solid... anyone running one like this or have any experience of it?

I saw in another thread the the BM Baker buses sound like they are a little harder than the Pug Sport ones already so maybe just a new one of those? The one I have in the car right now is over 2 years old...

Too much hp and a solid bottom mount = wheelspin. Try it and let us know. I think you'll prefer the Grp.N mount.

I've got one just like that. The cars not mot'd yet so I haven't really checked it out, but initally I didnt think it vibrated any more than a group N bush until my mate pointed out that everything in the rear view mirror was a blur!

I have a BBM solid lower mount going into my car currently.

Never come across that effect before Peter, I assume it's off the line you get a little more wheel spin ;)

The BBM one is still essentially rubber though yeah? Not just a solid bit of metal?

I have the bbm grp n mount does the job well (No movement at all) but im not running as much power as yours. There was quite a lot of vibration in the cabin to begin with and now after a few weeks (400 miles) of bedding in can hardly tell at all.

no, exiting corners. The tyres light up too easy. I had some nolathane mounts made but they were too hard. So I've changed to a Grp. N mount. I'm hoping that will fix it.

I'll keep that in mind then, you must have hell amout on of snap / non-linear progression of acceleration to suffer that surely

Won't you go crazy of all the vibration in the car with a solid mount?

yes you can't put the solid one in without a machine press

Have access to a press, we don't have anything the right size to press the current one out with so I'll leave it and see how it goes. Though I have it on good authority that a solid mount (i.e. solid metal with NO rubber) will just make everything vibrate loose!

yet another thing for me to prove/disprove with my build :D

I'd have thought im not the first to run with a solid lower mount.

I run with one on my mk2 golf road car and there's no unwanted vibrations. Makes for excellent gear changes

Hi Jon,

If you do decide to change your lower bush for one of mine I can press the old one out/new one in. Just send me the housing.

My solid rubber lower mount is a fair bit stiffer than the pugsport item you have. Where the pug sport one is just solid rubber mine have an extra stiffener ring in the rubber.

I also have a small batch of even stiffer ones if you feel the need :D

Just send a Pm Jon if you would like one.

Thanks

Stew

I'll be in touch shortly. I'll need an alloy Group A one for the new turbo lump ;)

Mate of mine had a solid teflon mount in his 205mi16. He hated it though. Clutch release is very sudden and gear changes are a lot less smooth.

Turned me off of the idea of a very sturdy mount....

I guess it's a lot to do with how you drive the car and what the car's use is though...

I have a pug sprt group A lower mount (90% alloy with a tiny rubber insert near mounting hole) apart from an increase in vibration on idle over a gp N item, there are no problems with it at all, gear changes are as smooth as anything, just make sure you loctite the starter motor bolts lol

Everything in my rear view mirror is a blur with the BBM mount, with a solid one I can only imagine it being worse  along with everything else vibrating...
