leigh1900 1 Posted June 18, 2006 hi just joined and in need of serious advice i have an h plate 1.9 gti thats been garaged for 4 years. the plan now is to restore to orig. cond. ive just had a new engine put in by what now turns out to be a complete cowboy. the engine starts but chucks it after a minute or 2 runs very rough and is hughly over fueling. ive checked the usual afm and press regulator. but did notice 2 spade conectors behind distributor cap on back top of engine with no wires attached is this sensors that have not been reconnected and if so could it be the cause of the fault? any ideas would be welcome as its doing my head in the car is perfect apart from the main thing not working cheers leigh ps anyone know of good auto electrician in glasgow area
jackherer 543 Posted June 18, 2006 but did notice 2 spade conectors behind distributor cap on back top of engine with no wires attached is this sensors that have not been reconnected and if so could it be the cause of the fault? the two single spade connectors are for the water temp gauge and the overheating warning light. there is a third blue two pin connector in the same area that is the engine management temp sensor. if this is disconnected it can cause running problems. leigh1900 1 Posted June 18, 2006 cheers i'll have a look for that other one tomorrow but i know that the first 2 are not connected and i cant find the loose wire anywhere the guy that has done this engine replacement needs shot i think
jackherer 543 Posted June 18, 2006 even if it was running fine you'd need those two connected so your gauges and warning lights work. the wires for both of them come from a brown multiplug above the gearbox area.
leigh1900 1 Posted June 19, 2006 cheers. is the brown multiplug above gearbox that you are talking about the one that comes from the loom that has about a dozen wires coming into it. if it is this plug then there is only one wire coming from it now. i'm just thinkink that the guy that done the engine has lost where the wires go and just removed them. ive just noticed that the plug that goes to the s.a.d is also missing and cant find the loose plug for that either
Rob_the_Sparky 10 Posted June 19, 2006 Nightmare: and yes the brown plug with a dozen or so wires. The one wire must be the starter motor...I think you need to source a second had loom section from the multiplug onwards and sneak a peek at a local GTi to work out where it all goes. Good luck Rob P.S. If this is badly bodged what about the rest of it, you might want to compare with another car and build a list of mssing items...
leigh1900 1 Posted June 19, 2006 cheers for advice im taking car over to auto electrician on wednesday for check over i'll get him to check over the whole system. then think i'll pay the garage that done the engine refit a little visit!!! ps how many wires should there be coming out of the brown multiplug?
Rob_the_Sparky 10 Posted June 19, 2006 The same number that goes in...mostly dash gauges and warning lights but also some essential functions. Rob
leigh1900 1 Posted June 19, 2006 thanks for advice like i said there is only one wire coming out at the moment. think the electrician will have his work cut out hope its not to big a job!
Rob_the_Sparky 10 Posted June 20, 2006 Hence me saying you may be best to get hold of another loom section, there are a lot of wires missing from what you describe.

Richie-Van-GTi 74 2 Cars Posted June 20, 2006 Wanted and sale sections on here are great for looms and stuff, ive had a couple from members here , if the sad isnt connected it would explain the overfueling and dying after 2 mins. When I bought my car it was a non runner, it done exactly what you described, turned out to be one tooth out on cam pulley and the SAD was faulty.
GLPoomobile 958 Posted June 20, 2006 Here you go wiring loom for sale (Am I allowed to post ebay links? Can't remember!) I'm not the seller by the way. Just happened to notice it and remembered this topic

leigh1900 1 Posted June 20, 2006 one more question on this overfueling problem like i said before the wire for the sad has not been reconnected and there is no sign of it in the bay. where would that wire lead back to in the loom if it was thers. cheers leigh
pug_ham 245 3 Cars Posted June 21, 2006 SAD should have a black two pin plug connected & there should be a blue one on the engine management temp sensor(CTS) like jackherer said earlier. They have been crossed connected before by people doing engine swaps & if the SAD plug has been connected to the CTS then this could explain your problem afaik. The SAD wire would run in the same loom as the wire to the coolant temp sender & wires to the brown multiplug along the front of the engine block from the driverside inner wing. The brown multiplug should have seven wires going through it; Starter solenoid. Alternator field winding. Oil pressure switch. Oil pressure sender. Oil temp sender (in sump). Water temp sender. Water overheat warning lamp. Graham.
leigh1900 1 Posted June 21, 2006 thanks for that i'm going out to check right now i know that the wire is going from the brown multiplug to the starter and thats the only wire coming out of it.
