Another Mot Fail Issue

Recommended Posts

Another one of the MOT fails was "play in OS front coil spring"

Basically, its fine when its on the wheels, but if the car is jacked, you can turn the coil spring slightly in the shock housing. Apparently, it has to be secure at all times in case you car wheel goes over a bump etc and the spring moves

Ive had the shock off, pulled it apart and reseated the spring.. Still no good :P

Its still sliding in the housing slightly

Any ideas on how to stop it moving

Cheers folks

Is it the standard shock cause if so then it shouldn't so that?!

Anyhow, you could probably use some cable ties to keep the spring seated and to prevent the shock from extending those last few mm that casue the spring to loosen... sounds like you have a harsh MoT guy though

This is common with lowered cars. Is yours lowered? The only way to fix it is to fit springs with a slightly longer free length or get the shocker shortened. Did they have both wheels off the ground at once? If you jack it up one wheel at a time the front sway bar keeps it tensioned enough for it not to be loose. So unless you are in the habit of jumping the front of your car they wont dislodge during normal driving.

As jon said get some cable ties on it you'll probably find there are some small holes aorund the bottom of the spring pan that the ties can go through and around the bottom of the spring.

It is lowered - 60mm

Its Koni Shocks and 60 mm Springs

Both wheels were off the ground at once, and in driving that probably wouldnt happen, but the station are stupidly strict... May have to result to putting standards back on for monday until it passes
