I Am Worried About Perishing Pipes

Recommended Posts

coombsfh

Under the bonnet there is a black cap which i believe to be the oil filler cap. it has two black rubber hoses leading from it. The one on the right is attached to the air intake and to the black cap(which is impossible to pull off by the way). It has perished and is full of oily residue.

Can anyone please explain:

>what the black cap is and how I remove it

>whether the hose that has perished is vital

>how I should replace it if necessary

>is the car drivable in this condition?

the black cap is the oil filler and you can buy them from halfords for a few quid...i occasionally smear a bit of oil on the rubber seal to help it last and to help remove it...you just pull the cap off

I would replace the hose but it's not vital just an oil breather so you'll probably find mayo coming out of there instead plus it may affect idling because it's created an airleak but id doubt it's anything that noticeable

I've seen loads of 205s with those hoses split, doesn't seem to be a problem :)

What is a problem is when the return line to your PAS reservoir perishes and splits at the top like mine did yesterday, covered the whole engine bay in PAS fluid :)
