Try telling Audi that with the R10 race car, ok they do have some problems - but thats down the to the tourqe than anything else.

 

 

Don't they have a bigger engine CC wise? If so not a true comparison.

lol - IMO diesel race cars are nothing more than a publicity stunt, they're trying to convince people that diesel is 'better' so they can sell more cars.

 

Maybe so but what if they fail? They ain't gonna take chances unless they know they can win.

 

The TFI engine appears to be a 5.2 V12 and the old R8 engine was 3.6 V8.

 

Diesel development appears to be picking up pace and getting very complex. Be interesting to see what you say in 5 years time on the subject :huh:

 

 

Going back on topic-ish, on the next major revision of the VEM's ECU there is some talk of supporting diesel engines. Common rail/HDI engine conversions might become a resonable engine swap then....

I can answer that now for you.

The reason diesel has caught up to petrol engine is the emission laws for diesels are quite open, but in a few years new emission standards for diesel engine will be quite tough (a bit like when catalysts were introduced for petrol engines) and will take away much of the advantages diesels currently have. Also throw in the fact that mass produced Direct Injection for petrol (read common rail equivalent) engines and a number of other technical advancements mean the diesels current fame will be short lived.
