Mi16 Over-reving

Recommended Posts

TaffyTim

Ive just had the Mi16 tinkered with and I need a new exhaust manifold which is on order.

Since the car has been back with me its been reving a little higher than before. Yesterday staerted ideling at 1500. Ive just driven it and now its ideling at 2100.

How do i get this back dow to the 1000rpm mark. on the 1.9 I had i used to adjust the air screw. Where is the air screw on the mi16?

I have searched on the site but i cant find the answer, it seems too much of a basic question

OK I found it, its in roughly the same place.

Something strange is going on though as when i turned the car on it was ideling at the 1000rpm mark agian!!

Thinking about it that also happened this morning and yesterday. It ideled fine at start up but after 10 mins driving then the high idle reves came in?

Any ideas on what might be going on?

Dodgy water temp sensor/connection to sensor? Making the ECU think the engine is cold and raising the idle...

Is it running MI management or 1.9/Dizzy adapter? If its running MI management you shouldn't need to adjust the idle screw, the ICV should take care of idle speed

When I first got mine running it did the same - turned out that the car it came out of used 1.9 management so to maintain the idle speed, the throttle pot had been adjusted to hold the throttle open slightly. This meant that the ICV was closed all the time and making no difference to the idle speed.

It could also be a warn throttle body letting air in through the spindles, but I think this is fairly rare.

Worn throttle body/spindle, sticking throttle cable, or its the engine management / ICV is throwing a wobbly (this was my Mi's party trick about a mile or two before it broke down with another blown dizzy cap) would be my suggestion.

ok tahks for the ideas guys.

I was told that it is using MI management Sweetbadger, thanks for the tip about leaving the idle screw alone.

Might be onto something with the sticking throttle cable Anthony, one of the few tinkerings that were carried out was a new clip put on the end of the throttle cable. Aparently it wasnt getting the full throttle before this so Miles put the clip on to sort it out.

Could it be the throttle cable is knackered and the old clip was taken off on purpose?

To test the cable shall i give it a tug next time its ideling too much to see if it releases? Or is there a better way of testing the cable?

I remember having problems like this and ended up having to get a pHd on throttle body adjustments before I could sort it.

yeah ive been reading up on it and seems a little tricky.

As its a new problem I think ill sit on it for a week to monitor how it plays up.

I believe the ICV will sit fully open if it fails...get someone to confirmt his though.

I have no tools to test the icv so as I will be getting the new exhaust manifold put on in a couple of weeks I will ask to test this when its in the garage.

Out of interst where is the ICV, do i take its on the throttle body? if so which part is the icv.

its the silver cylinderical object on the inlet manifold held on with a rubber strap with two black hoses connected to it. If you squeeze one of the pipes and the revs drop then its the ICV raising them and if they stay the same or only drop a bit the problem is elsewhere.

I fixed a similar problem on my Mi16 today BTW, the spindle in the throttle body was worn as Anthony mentioned above so I fitted a new TB.

ok thanks for that jackherer, im off to castle combe tomorrow so i will have a fiddle when i get there to see if the revs drop if i squeeze the pipes mentioned.

Im starting to think that its the throttle body on mine too.

I'll give an example of how random the revs are behaving on idle from when i washed it today.

I moved the car 50 yards down my road to wash it outside my house. It stared up and idled at 2100rpm. I switched the car off then 5 secs later switched it back on. The engne then idled at its usual place of 1100 (which i belive is high for an mi16). Once washed i moved the car 50 yards away (Pikey kids like to sit on my wall and kick a ball about so i like to keep it away from them) and on start up it idled at 2000rpm. I tried my luck with switching off and on but it didnt work this time and when i did park up the idle sat at 2100rpm.

Its so random its unbelievable. I do like these little faults though as its a good method for me to learn more about the mechanics of my car.
