Mi16 Misfire On Idle Only

Recommended Posts

Hi,

My (totally standard) mi is now running on motronic 1.3 (sort of) but I've got a couple of problems which I've got stuck on:

I've got a misfire on idle, well more of a chugging really. This dissapears as soon as I open the throttle. It appears about 30 seconds after starting the engine from cold. The engine does not misfire elsewhere in the rev range. Compression is good - 210 psi exactly across all cylinders, cam timing is spot on and no fault codes are reported when I stick the ecu in diagnostic mode. I have swapped coil and ignition amp with known good items and the car has new plugs/leads and a newish dizzy cap.

The engine is also flat as a pancake until the last 4500-5000 rpm. It's not much better than the 1.6 I took out before hitting 5k and then it picks up a bit. The exhaust is blowing a fair bit but I can't imagine it would kill performance that badly.

Any ideas anyone?

Cheers

Dean

You replace the rotor arm as well as the cap??

chugging at idle sounds like an air leak, probably caused by a split in the inlet hose or oil filler hose letting extra air in.

a blowing exhaust can lose a lot of power...

rotor arm has been replaced. The first one exploded in a shower of broken plastic because I forgot to tighten the bolts holding it to the cam :D.
