What Makes Brakes Stick On?

Not 205 related but will any advice go towards helping me to keep my 205 while I go travelling for a year - if I sell my Grandad's kit car for him (posted an ad on here a while ago) he'll buy my 205 off me and keep it for a year while I'm away :wacko:

 

Anyway, it's going to fetch more if we get it MOT'd and taxed but it's developed a problem with the right front break sticking on.

 

I don't no much more than how to bleed a brake system so wondering what could be causing this, I've got to fix it and he's in Manchester so don't want to go all the way up there without having any idea what's wrong with it...

 

The front calipers are on the same circuit so I would have thought if the master cylinder was incorectly adjusted then both calipers would stick on, in which case it points to a problem with the right hand caliper itself.

 

Any ideas? If it is the caliper I think they're ford 4 pots, how hard is it to rebuild a caliper with a kit?

Could be the caliper seizing, but does it have rubber flexi hoses? if so they could be breaking down inside making the caliper stick on?

Didn't think of that, could be a possibility but I think the hoses were new when the car was built and although it was built about 5 yrs ago it's only covered 600 miles... I'll ask him to take a look at them anyway. Cheers

What type of calipers? Could be a piston has got stuck, if it is a single piston type (like most standard fitments) then it could be the sliders have jammed up.

 

My approach would be to force the pistons in/out a few times and check the sliders are free at the same time.

Seized piston, it obviously doesn't get used so things will seize up.

 

Take one pad out of that side and get him on the middle pedal, be gentle though. Push the pistons back in, repeat a few times. Then put the pad back in, and take the other pad out of that caliper and do it again.
