Rotating The Housing On A T25 Turbo

I've got some decent locking nuts to fit to my turbo before I put it on. But Anyone with a TT (or a T25, or maybe any turbo?) will know that theres one nut that hides between the flange ( :D ) and the housing. The left one in this pic..

 

I know turbos have to be rebalanced if you take them apart but is it ok to take the bolts out and rotate the housing for access, I don't have any decent pics of the bolts I mean right now but I'll get some at the wkend if need be. I'm sure someone will know though? :wacko: They sit on the right of the bracket in the above pic IIRC.

Think you only need to rebalance them if you take the wheels off the shaft. Just moving the housings around can't (as far as I can see) affect the balance of the moving assembly within :wacko:

Has anyone ever done it? Is that the right way, just undo the bolts and spin it round?

Not only did I undo the nuts and rotate the housing, I took the housing of all together!!!

 

Its only the shafts/propellors of the turbo that actually rotate and thus need to be balanced. The housing has no effect whatsoever so can be removed no problem (it is only held in by those four 13mm bolts).

 

One word of warning, be carefull not to round the bolts that hold the housing in place, theyre quite soft!

 

What nuts did you use in the end?

 

 

edit: you can remove the inlet side just as easy by releasing the mother of a circlip that holds it in place, just remember the angle it sits at before you do.

 

You really want to make sure those nuts are sorted before the turbo gos on the car...I learnt the hard way! Twice :)

yup i reangled the compressor housing on mine myself, but as mak says the ones on the exhaust housing proved too soft for me to attempt so i left that one to the professionals!

make sure you torque all the bolts correctly if the compressor housing is held in place by them.... This is very important as it can sit slightly at a angle and cause the blades to hit the inside of the housing!

I got some cossie manifold nuts.

 

I also ordered some of the spiralock ones in 10mm, I have an old manifold with stripped threads so at some point I'll get them both taped to bigger studs, as suggested in the emerald TT guide on the main site, and use the spiralocks.

Yeah, I read about that one, so tempting as it's been I havn't put it on yet! :D
