Baffled Mi16 Sump

Recommended Posts

Veero

Right got this baffled sump off JonM and I don't know quite what to make of it.

It apparently was done by Spoox but seems a bit shanty to me. Just a piece of checkerplate welded in and the lower webs of the tray ground out.

Im wondering if they ground the webs off to run the sump without the spacer plate maybe?

What do you guys think of this? Is it worth trying or just sticking on eBay?

LOL, whats with the checker plate? and the surface inside. I seem to remember him saying it was from a certain Pug tuner.

Good ebay contestant to me and get a S16 or GTi6 sump which has the trap door in the plate

I hasten to add that myself and Tris discussed the sump before he bought it so I didn't sell it to him blind as it were... we both thought it was a bit naff but I let it go for bargain money knowing that he can sell it on eBay if he wants to

With its mighty checker pattern I bet it gives up to 50% more cooling and 50% more bhp!

to be fair it doesn't really matter what material the baffle is made of as long it sticks, and it looks pretty much like what some sumps come with baffles are like as standard. Not sure why a bit of the vanes have been ground though, maybe it had some modified pickup on some other engine?

There's nothing wrong with checker plate, it's what you do with it that counts. I sometimes use checker plate when I baffle XU9 sumps. It's more rigid than flat plate, and with the door on the flat side what's the difference?

I know it doesn't matter that it's using checkerplate, it's a bit like painting your manifold though, noones gonna see it so why bother, apart from the fact it is quite stiff.

I would think a stiff plate like those would restrict oil flow both ways... Which is why a trap door would work better, as it opens up for more oil towards the pump.

Than again, maybe thats just my farmers logic :P

That's almost identical to the one Veero now has... maybe it will work OK then!

The factory peugeot ones sits right at the bottom with no gap and just a small trap door so oil flow through it is probably the same as the gap through the vanes. However, oil surge problems with the Mi16 tend to be on long left handers so theoretically you want to restrict the oil flow to the oil pump side of the sump as much as possible.

Yeah, good point C_W. I forgot the door was the only hole in the factory baffle.

When I baffle XU9 sumps, I have a door as per XU10 dimensions, but I also leave a small gap on each side so oil (and more importantly sedatives) will drain correctly back to the main area during oil changes.

That's another good point, mine is almost all blocked apart from a small gap in the middle but when I had the sump off last (last year) it was clean.
