Sam 4 Posted June 10, 2006 I realise I need a 3" bore system for the new engine, but how many boxes to most people have. Its been suggested to run a side exit, because turbo cars seem to like much shorter systems. I'm just worried about how loud that could be?
Dj_mini 7 Posted June 10, 2006 I ran a 2.5" bore system with one back box on my sax turbo that was a nice sound but not two loud. A mate has a 5gtt with a k-tec side exit that sounds sweet not loud at all but it does has a big box in the system.

Turbo acts as a silencer, so a turbo car with a straight through exhaust is quieter than NA one with the same exhaust.
Sam 4 Posted June 10, 2006 Yep thats what I thought hence the suggestion, just wasn't sure if it would sound really loud. Would certainly be easier to fabricate!
sonofsam 5 Posted June 10, 2006 True turbo acts as a silencer, however i would of thought a side exit may be a bit of a bad idea, because in effect you will move the back-box further foward thus creating less flow nearer the turbo. Downpipe is the most important part...side exit would rock though. What grade are you going for ?
Super Josh 4 Posted June 11, 2006 Turbo acts as a silencer, so a turbo car with a straight through exhaust is quieter than NA one with the same exhaust. Until the Wastegate is fully open Josh
pdd144c 0 Posted June 11, 2006 If your still popping down to see Miles mine is down there. Will probably make another one though as the welding isn't great from what I remember.
Sam 4 Posted June 11, 2006 Going there at about 12.30, is Miles/X-Sport making your new system? sonofsam: I've seen quite a few turbo cars run side exit, some sound ok others sound a bit loud. Wasn't sure on the material to use.
pdd144c 0 Posted June 11, 2006 Yeah id imagine so. I'll be down there somepoint this after 12 id imagine.
sonofsam 5 Posted June 11, 2006 316 would be ideal, may prove expensive in that bore though, depends were you buy it from i guess. I will be dry fabricating a full straight through 2.5" next week some time for my 205.Could prove a pita as i have no ramps and cant weld S/ST, but there is an excellent pipe and steel macine shop round the corner from me who are willing to weld it together and the jetex bends(314) i will be using are mostly all swaged so dry joining should'nt be to difficult. I did contemplate a side exit, but the law side of things seemed a bit sketchy to me and i *think* it would be seriously loud, could depend on the quality of the back-box though? James_R 3 Posted June 11, 2006 If you're going with the side exit, point it out the drivers side so you don't get caught as bad on drive by sound test on track
JamieTonks 1 Posted June 12, 2006 i used 3 1/2 inch on my turbo sam.
Sam 4 Posted June 12, 2006 I think 3" is ok up to 350bhp
cybernck 402 1 Cars Posted June 13, 2006 how about something like this?
Sam 4 Posted June 13, 2006 No doubt I'll end up making something with parts from this page: http://www.jetex.co.uk/website/custom_part...ss&dia=3.0+inch
sonofsam 5 Posted June 13, 2006 I think Coolmotion was the cheapest place i found for them parts. Some good reading at cobbtuning.com for turbo exhaust designs, if you've not seen it already that is
Sam 4 Posted June 13, 2006 Is it a job you could do for the right money?
sonofsam 5 Posted June 13, 2006 Sam, i feel i may need to hedge my bets on that answer, till i find out how much grief my turbo back system building is going to cause me. Obviously i dont mind lending you a hand when the time comes and can let you know how much i get charged for the welding etc and supply some bits of S/ST sheet or rods that would come in handy for hangers.
