jerseypug 1 Posted June 10, 2006 i have a mi16 with a 6 padle clutch, standard mi clutch cover and a 8v 1.9 gti release bearing in a be1 1.9 box with mi final drive gearbox. the clutch was made to a standard patern mi clutch. the adjustment on the cable has been wound all the way to the bottom of the threads, the pedal is very, very heavy. i have noticed that on the mi box the clutch arm is about 8 inches and the be1 arm is much shorter, the clutch does not appear to be working, the car is on axle stands with no wheels on and if i run the engine in gear with the clutch pushed in and apply the brakes the engine will stall. i have done a search. any help would be appreciated before i cover myself in stinking gearbox oil. jerseypug 1 Posted June 10, 2006 adjusted it right up and seems to be working ok now just very heavy
Miles 331 1 Cars Posted June 10, 2006 All the BE1 box's well the 1.6 and 1.9 are heavy as the clutch arm is a bit short compared to the BE3's and MI16 BE1. Depending on the year of box you might be able to swap over to the BE3 arm on the BE1 box
jerseypug 1 Posted June 10, 2006 thanks for that, i will give the clutch arm a try otherwise i think i will have to start going to the gym,
Guest Ictoan Posted June 11, 2006 Just a thought, but could it be a problem with the clutch cable? If it is new it may be worth taking it off and re-fitting and making sure it routes correctly. Tim
jerseypug 1 Posted June 11, 2006 it is a new cable, i will have a look to check that it is positioned correctly, cheers
jerseypug 1 Posted June 16, 2006 the cable is vey smooth and runs freely. is this a common problem with mi clutches in a be1 box? the mi clutch lever seems much longer. i was going to put my internals in the mi box but the gear rods seemed to be in a different position. will the be3 lever make much difference as i have another box i can use
Anthony 1,003 Posted June 19, 2006 The clutch will be heavier than modern cars certainly and the later BE3 'boxes, but BE1 'boxes shouldn't have *that* much of a heavy clutch - certainly most of the ones I've driven my mother would be able to use easily enough. I'd personally say that something's amiss somewhere, especially if the cable is adjusted to the end of it's threads to get the clutch to engage...
jerseypug 1 Posted June 20, 2006 thanks for that, as mi clutches with be1 boxes shouldnt be that heavy it looks like i will have to take the box off and have a look. i have used the be1 release bearing as the mi one was different. the clutch pedal is about 25mm higher than the brake pedal and has to be pushed to the floor before it will work. i have looked through the inspection hole and all seems well. i have no idea what could be wrong,
jochem 0 Posted June 20, 2006 I have a mi16 cltuch and used both an 8v be1 and 405mi16 be1 box. I didnt find the clutch that heavy though. But maybe i was too used to driving be1. Whenever i drive other cars i usually tend to think i kicked through the cable whenever i start the gti again.....
jerseypug 1 Posted June 22, 2006 i have just taken the box out, replaced the pressure plate re fitted and it is still really heavy. taken the box out again and am going to put all the internals in to the mi box. it looks like a roll pin holding the different gear arm on so hopefully should not be too difficult
jerseypug 1 Posted June 26, 2006 all done now, clutch is much better than before, just a problem with the lever arm hitting the battery tray, mine is one of the earliest 1.9s. does anyone know if there are different battery trays available?
smckeown 1 Posted June 27, 2006 all done now, clutch is much better than before, just a problem with the lever arm hitting the battery tray, mine is one of the earliest 1.9s. does anyone know if there are different battery trays available? As it's not a road car, can you just not shave a bit off the tray ?
jerseypug 1 Posted June 27, 2006 i thought about that but didnt want to weaken it for the gearbox mount. i suppose i could cut a bit off and weld a bit on.
