Re-fitting 'box, Problem With Clutch Release Arm

Recommended Posts

Guest Ictoan

Re-fitting BE1 'box and we are have a problem with the clutch. With the box bolted to the block the arm feels solid (which we are not happy about-expected a bit of slack), and appears to be sitting at a slight angle to the vertical (not much though). Feels like the thrust bearing is hard against the pressure plate. Don't seem to be able to get enough adjustment on the cable. Hard to imagine the arm has come adrift from the thrust bearing, but it may have. Fitted a new pressure plate but using the paddle friction plate that was already there. The replacement is a Luk, same as the original, and looked identical and is for the BE1 box on a 1.6 gti. The box is a BE1 with 1.6 casing and final drive but fitted with 1.9 cluster, inc. input shaft from a 1.9 BE1.

Need to sort this first thing in the morning hopefully so looking for a quick miracle

If anyone can wave a magic wand I would be eternally grateful, if not then the answer to my problem will do, please?

Cheers, Tim

Problem solved, and as suggested by Baz and Ryan it was the thrust bearing which had slipped with all the manouvering to get it in. Used the cable tie to hold the bearing on to the fork. Sorted!

The starter motor is a so and so to refit. Does everyone always use the rear bracket and both bolts?

And, we seem to have broken a BLACK plastic bracket which seems to hold a sensor into the block at the back. Do not believe this is the TDC sensor as location is wrong and the colour of the plastic bracket is not white.

Any ideas?

Thanks again, Tim

Ignore above comment about the sensor, it is indeed the TDC sensor. Got myself mixed between the non-Gti one pictured in the Haynes manual ant the Gti one which isn't. Doh!
