Oil Getting Too Hot?

Hi,

 

Right, got the CTi taxed, nice sunny days so I've been out and about quite a bit recently. Driving after a winter layup has revealed a few issues, well LOTS of issues really, but that's half the fun isn't it?? :angry: But the one thats got me stumped at the moment is my oil temperature. I did a search on the subject but the threads didn't really pinpoint my problem.

 

Basically on shortish runs (10-15 miles mainly dual carriageway) the oil temperature slowly creeps up to the top of the scale then sits there. My water temp is spot on (never goes more than a 1/3 of the scale unless I'm in standing traffic). I've checked the wiring to the sensor in the sump which seems to be ok. Looking at the other threads, peoples oil temp guage was just going straight to the max which was diagnosed as the wire shorting on the block. Mine rises gradually over the journey as if it is actually reading.

 

Could it be that it's faulty anyway and is just over-reading (as my water temp is fine) or is there anything else I can check that would cause genuine high oil temp even though the water temp is fine? In an effort to sort it out I've changed the oil/filter (10w40 semi synthetic) and drained and refilled the coolant.

Oil pressure is good about 1/2 way up on idle and 2/3 under load.

I thought the oil temp guage was fed from the sensor in the sump? What does the one in the block do?

I'd imagine thats the oil pressure sensor.

It is.

 

The two sensors in the front of the block on the left hand side, are Oil Pressure sensor, and Oil Pressure sender. The one on the right (narrow) is Oil pressure sensor and operates the oil pressure lights, the one on the left is the Oil pressure sender and operates the oil pressure guage.

So does anyone think it's likely that the temp sensor is over reading? :lol:

 

or

 

could there be something else causing the oil to get too hot, bearing in mind that my water temp is fine :lol:

 

or

 

am i just worrying about nothing! :angry:

 

 

If it's not likely to be anything other than the sensor over reading I'll just change it over at the next oil change.

If you had too little oil it would be getting hot but that would show on the oil pressure guage. Most likley to be the oil temp guage itself as I'd imagine you'd really have to thrash a CTi for quite some time for the oil to get hot enough to reach the upper limits of the guage.
