GlasgowRob 0 Posted June 8, 2006 ok went to check the timing on le shed, mmmmkayyy no markings on the pulleys whats the big idea about that? haynes manual suggest a little access panel hiding on the dizzy end? is it the one under the dizzy with the grate over it? any advise most welcome for a befuddled ex vaux boy
mattmk1 0 Posted June 8, 2006 not sure about the haynes way, but if you remove the cam belt cover, you will see that there is a small hole in the cam wheel. This hole lines up with a hole in the head and you can pass a drill bit between the two to lock the cam. The markings on the crank should be in line. From here on, fine tuning the timing ie retarding advancing via the dizzy is a little bit of a black art, you can get a timing light in just do a search and it should come up, was discussed recently. hope that helps,
Kev-G 1 Posted June 8, 2006 There is an access hole in the front/top of the gearbox (above the starter, and below the dizzy) - This should have a plate bolted inside which sits over the flywheel to provide the timing marks.
MartinM 0 Posted June 9, 2006 (edited) There is an access hole in the front/top of the gearbox (above the starter, and below the dizzy) - This should have a plate bolted inside which sits over the flywheel to provide the timing marks. ...and if you're a better man than nearly everyone, you'll be able to get the engine to run (ie with the AFM and all the wiring still in place) and be able to get the timing light into this hole at the same time. But it's verging on impossible for mere mortals. Best thing is to expose the timing marks and transfer them onto the crank pulley (with some sort of pointer rigged up to point at the pulley) and use that....
