Trumpet Lengths / Intake Lengths

Recommended Posts

TT205

There has been quite a lot over the last few months regarding longer intake lengths to get better torque figures

I've just got my 8V hill climb car back from being mapped and we tried varying intake lengths, we found this the best .....

Thought you might like this picture :D I now have an extra pedal for playing the organ ;)

How much increase did you get with the longer trumpets compared with a typical setup with the air filters behind the slam panel?

Do you have graphs to compare? Just talking peak figures is pointless :D

Can't compare to original setup as we have changed the cam too. Repeating runs as it is now but with different intake length gave a difference of ~20 ft/lb peak torque iirc - will check figures and post again

Might be worth getting something fabricated to put underneath the filters to stop the warm air getting to them from the radiator to reduce the inlet temps a bit. Looks like you could run a nice wee bit of plastic down to the grill and get a nice cold air feed like that.

Cool, well done by the way for getting on with it! Too much talk and not enough experimentation sometimes on the forums!!

good stuff. My car should be mapped end of this month/early next month, i also expect to play a bit with inlet lengths.

Can you buy trumpet extensions to etend them significantly in the middle between the trumpet and the TB ?

If you look closely you can work out what material we used :P LOL!

It took an exhaustive ;) search for the material though didn't it Dave?

Pictures below are wrong way round, Dave over cooking it through the Esses at Harewood last Sunday. ;) (Dave's word not mine)

I did, but I don't have a spare scrap washing machine and bits of string ;) Joking, just looking to make it a bit more secure ;)

Oooooh ya bitch :)

Don't worry, it's secure as hell, not going anywhere

Quality washing machine parts I'll have you know, no string though!

Do you not find those mini cone filters restrictive? I had those on my TB's without trumpets and it was flat top end - swapped them for 65mm trumpets and ITG filter and the difference on the road is amazing.

My inlet length is similar to yours now, the trumpets landing over the top of the rad.

Cone filters affected top end by 2BHP only, so for the sake of 2 BHP they can stay for now

Who mapped yours in the end?

thanks sport, I remember this thread now. I suppose your lucky those individual filters are so small.

Am I right in thinking for a track car build for the average twistly(ish) kind of track (rather than silverstone etc) then mid range torque is much more important than top end power ?

IMO yes to both situations, more torque is better than top end power.
