Info Required On What Is Believed To Be The Oil Temp Sensor In The Sum

Recommended Posts

rutlandguy

Whilst having a good look around my new toy a 1989 205 1.9 example I noticed a sensor in the engine sump. I assume it is the oil temp sensor but would be grateful if someone could confirm this for me.

However the sensor doesn't have any wiring connected to it so I be grateful if someone could advise of the wire insulation colour of the wire that should be connected to the sensor and where the wire breaks out from the main loom with pics if at all possible.

I should like to perform a basic test to ascertain if the sensor is in good working order. I assume its resistive properties change with temperature and this can be measured with a multi-meter. If so what sort of resistance reading am I looking for when the engine is cold and when it is at full working temperature. Finally can anyone tell me if the oil temp senor has the same part no: or has the same characteristics as the water temp sensor?

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Phil

If the sensor is in the back of the sump near the lower engine torque mount it is the oil temp sender. These wires have a tendency to snap.

The wire should be white with a ring terminal on.

A 1989 GTi won't have the brown multiplug afaik but somewhere on the left of the engine above the gearbox you should find a loose wire hanging around. If you do, short it against the block with the igntion on & if the oil temp guage goes full scale you have found your wire.

both my '89 205s have the brown multiplug, I think '89 is the year it was introduced.

I did say AFAIK. :D

I've seen some early 1990 H reg cars (phase1.5's) without them so...
