White Marks On Cambelt

Recommended Posts

Hi, I've done a quick search on cambelt but couldn't find the answer to these questions:

I'm trying to fit a cambelt to a Citroen BX 16V engine, neither Haynes nor the instructions in the cambelt kit mention the white lines on the belt but there are 3 of them which makes me think they should line up somehow between the pulleys. Do these matter and if they do what do they line up with?

Also, when I do try and fit it I can get the pins to line up but the bottom tensioner is fully wound out while the upper one is nearly fully backed off. I would have thought they should both be somewhere in between?

Haynes also say that with the keyways in the cams at the 3 o'clock position the timing holes should line up - mine don't no matter which pulley I put on. Is Haynes talking bollocks here or maybe they line up if you have different pulleys, mine are 2 and 4?

Cheers

Miles

You need to line up all the timing marks, The bottom pulley is in line with the engine and a 8mm bolt (at this hour) goes thru this, The cam ones really need a steped pin to get 100% but a bolt of around 6mm will do the job with some careful lining up, The tensioners vary from engine to engine and if you've had a head skim as this alter's the positsion of them slightly.

The marks are for the 106 GTi engine which uses the same belt

Miles is spot on there, I have a proper Snap On Pug timing kit, but in the past I have done the following, for the cam pulleys get two 6 x 25 mm bolts and file the thread off the first 5mm, they are then perfect timing pins. For the crank, use an 8mm drill bit, shank first obviously. The trick with getting these belts on right is getting the tension down the front stretch and across the cam pulleys right, and taking up the slack on the rear stretch.

the bolts from the manifold to dowpipe are perfect for the cam holes.

as miles said crank pulley locks about 12.

inlet pulley about 9oclock and exhuast about 6oclock.

Oh yeah, the longer seat bolts, the ones that hold the subframes to the floor are also perfect for locking the cam pulleys...

Cheers...

cheers guys, for reference the white marks on the belt do not seem to line up with anything in particular, I have run the engine fine. Getting the timing spot on was jut a matter of adjustment using the tensioners (though it did take a while to get it corect).
