Gti-6 Gearbox

Recommended Posts

Rik

I would only ever fit a Gti-6 gearbox if it didnt make the 205's turning circle any bigger...

So what are the possible solutions to stop it?

I've done a search and found out that a few companies can shorten the gears, but its way too expensive (excess of 3k!!!)

I've already planned and bought most components to gain extra front wheel camber on my car,

so my main question is, Will this increased camber effect any clearence issues with the Gti-6 gearbox? meaning it wont effect the turning circle of the wheel is further away?

Has anyone done this to their Pug?

It won't make any significant difference.

the casing of GTi6 gearbox is about 2 inches longer than a normal BE3/5 gearbox. i think unless you can put a 2 inches spacer there to clear it, otherwise you can never retain the turning radius as before (oh, you also need a 2 inches longer driveshaft).

Obviously increasing the front track by using 309 gti wishbones and driveshafts would help.

you dont really notice the turning circle unless you do alot of parking, fitted 309 front suspension to mine and gti6 box, its worth doing

No 309 wishbones here!

Rose Jointed bottom arms, with Eccentric top mounts are going to be fitted!

But i dont know how far in inches this will be pushed out! I'll probaly be using BX driveshafts which are longer.

This gonna help then?

Not really since the strut top is still in the same place, you've only added camber so the centre point of the wheel will be pretty much the same place, just that the bottom is pulled out a bit.

Just to add in std form the GTi6 box is allot weaker than the 5 speed item.

But I don;t know anyone who has got the full steering angle with this inless you have a wide body kit

it you can push the lower part away by 2 inches, you may still get a little gain at the centre point of the wheel. but if the wheel is only pulled out by a tiny or an inch, difference at the centre is minimal.

probably not as bad as you think, my friend's GTi6 is still fine with his 6 speed box since it's new.

again, from my point of view the GTi6 is the best gearbox you can get, with the best gearing, only if you don't have to do a lot of parking and entering multi-storey carpark. wanted to get one for a try unfortunately it's a very very rare item here.

I have a Gti6 box in my car and I spank it rotten every time I drive it,Hasnt let go yet !,You space wheels but I wouldnt ,plus caliper then hits instead where brake hose enters it at the top,In short just drive it and enjoy, you soon get used to the reduced r/h lock.

Quaife Lsd works nicely too

Totally agree with last two posts, have one myself and know of a few others, and never had or heard of any probs. You do hear 6 speeds are fragile quite a lot, and was wondering if anyone has actually managed to kill one? If they are weak, I'd imagine the GTI-6 lads will be screaming out for them soon!
