rooster 0 Posted June 5, 2006 i was driving home on friday and someone flashed me but i turned off so carried on onto the motorway, there was no sounds of grinding etc or smoke i could see and i had the roof down. i started to loose control of the car and pulled in to find i had a flat tyre and the wheel and trye was red hot to the touch ?? it looks like i had a nail or screw in the tyre but the heat expanded the tyre and i blew out got towed home but the brakes dont bind and the caliper looks ok but im gonna change it anyway as i dont trust it now. could it be anything else that locks up calipers in this case just one. PsychoSimon 0 Posted June 5, 2006 (edited) if youve driven it on a flat, or deflating tyre it will get red hot. they get warm when they are being driven normally so when ur mashing it about running it flat then there is a lot more movement of the rubber and subsequently a lot of heat generated. Doof 11 Posted June 5, 2006 What he said ^^ I wouldn't go changing things like hubs, brakes etc. Its most likely a normal puncture and the heat was just from the excess movement in the deflated tyre. Happened on our astra and we just changed the tyre...stil going fine years later.
rooster 0 Posted June 5, 2006 cheers i will double check the caliper just in case but looks like i wont change it but i think i need a handbrake cable on the drivers side as its breaking up. that saves me some cash
Guest dtouzel Posted June 21, 2006 I had a binding brake once, was taking it down the motorway and it didnt want to go more than 100, which I thought was odd, took it to the garage and they said I was lucky that the front disk didnt explode, where it must have been so hot, freed the brakes, new pads and all was well again... tom_m 0 Posted June 21, 2006 one of the rear calipers on my f-reg bound on and when we changed it the disc was paper thin and blue from the heat - had no effect on the wheel or tyre tho.
steve@cornwall 100 Posted June 21, 2006 cheers i think i need a handbrake cable on the drivers side as its breaking up. that saves me some cash Probably already know, but buy a pair of cables as "good" one will have stretched and fitting one can give adjustment probs. I found out the hard way.
