Cam Tutorial Required

Recommended Posts

macaroni

Wasn't sure where to put this request, but as most engine gurus seem to frequent this section, it will do.

I searched for this answer but couldn't find any info, please direct to me to a relevant post if anyone knows of one.

I want a brief, or otherwise, tutorial on cam profiles; lift, duration, timing, etc, etc, what each means, their inter-relations and effect on engine performance.

Any information gratefully received.

Lift: how far the cam lobes open the valves

Duration: how long the valves stay open for

Timing: the point at which the valves open/close during the combustion/exhaust cycle.

Generally more lift/duration will be better for top end power but will have an adverse effect on low down torque...

what difference does the cam timing have on the engine? Is there a general rule for best cam performance setup?
