Remove Sunroof

Recommended Posts

Guest toby7

I am going to remove my sunroof and it leaks, whistles and would rathre do without it completely.

If I remove the sunroof glass, rails and framing (ie everything) leaving a big rectangle hole in the roof . . and urethane (strong silicone) a large thin tinted or clear piece of plastic or perspex in place . . . .will the roof be as strong as it was ? Is the existing sunroof framing there to provide a measure of structural ridgidity ?

Or would I be better off riviting a sheet of panel steel over the top.

Your thoughts please

a sheet of steel would look alot better i reckon if you painted it to match the car. i would have thought perspex would work fine aswell tho, cant see the glass serving anything other thank letting the sun in

Bought my 1.6 GTi with a panel riveted over the sunroof spot. could have had a better job done tbh. It would look better if it was welded in and smoothed off. also there are grooves where the rails were going down the roof, but unless you're looking virtually right at it, it doesn't stand out.

I've booked my 205 in to have a panel steel sheet 'rolled' with a slight curve in it and 'bonded' to the roof to cover the sunroof hole.

The panel shop owner tells me he can do it in such a way that it would look very close to a non sunroof model.

Next up . . tinted perspex rear screen.

Did mine a few weeks ago, just purchaced a sheet of ally and bonded it onto the roof. I finished it off with some rivets just to make sure. From some angles you would never know it was there!

i pop riveted a plate from my mates old written off 1.9, just used plenty of seam sealent and some pop rivets, i think it adds to the rally slag look. there is a fair bit of dust in the seam, but i reckon it looks ok.

Depends how you use your car, i think most of the guys have done this with a view to motorsport use, in which case the cars are no good looking too pretty anyhow.
