What are the symptoms?

Have you bled the brakes properly to expel all the air?

More likely siezed compensators than the MC if the front brakes are still OK....

Not quite sure how the brakes can be bled properly if no fluid came out of the rear circuit. :)

Is it a 1.6 or 1.9 GTi originally? Compensators are the most likely suspect like Anthony says though.

its a 1.4 atm hoping for an engine transplant soon. so the compensators are they easy to do or would you recomend getting a garage to do it?

Easy to do, in theory but remember they are over 10 years old. I assume on a 1.4 the compensator will be under the bonnet.

AFAIK a 1.4 has the compensators built into the rear wheel cylinders so it might be something more serious thats stopping fluid getting through.

Have you fitted the disc brakes on the 309 beam?

no ive still got the drums on the rear could it be something as simple as a brake line has been bent or damaged so the fluid isnt getting through?

Thats a possibility but there should be two brake lines to the rear so both must be blocked.
