kate205gti 4 Posted May 30, 2006 need some help understanding pulleys if anyones got a couple of mins and some patience please ive done a search but just ending up more confused!! Ive got an mi16 on tbs with emerald ecu and standard cams, its going into emerald for a remap at the end of june and im hoping to have some inlet only catcams by then to make the remap worth while following dave walkers article in PPC about cam timing on the mi engine ive been hankering after some vernier pulleys for a while and would be a good excuse/reason to get them now i think only i dont really understand whats involved in fitting/timing them is this something i can do myself? im presuming the cambelt will come off but the pulleys can be fitted with the engine in situ? what exactly is involved in fitting inlet cams and pulleys please? also do the DW8 pulleys from peugeot fit in the same way as piper/kent/catcam, etc..? thanks in advance for any advice
James_R 3 Posted May 30, 2006 Basically a veriner pulley lets you adjust the relative position of that cam in relation to the other cam and the crank pulley. This lets you set the peak lift of each cam relative to the TDC of the enigne. this can be done to about half a degree accuratecy (sp?) so you can tweak the cams to get the best performance out the enigne, as cams are never going degree perfect when they are ground. to set them up you need a dgree dial, some wire and plunger dial gauge and a stand to go with the dial gauge
huxley309 0 Posted May 30, 2006 Don't necessarily need a degree dial guage or a specialist stand Mine was set using a coilpack frame bolted to the head using just a dial guage and the cam specs at tdc, is a tricky affair kate and even after watching im not 100% i could take it on for fear of getting it wrong One of my centre pin punches sat on the piston with the dial guage to get tdc that but was fairly easy
pug_ham 245 3 Cars Posted May 30, 2006 I set the timing on my 8v with a vernier as the Piper regrind & skimmed head mean't my cam timing was 8' out. Find true TDC of piston & then turn crank the required degrees further so actual full cam lift should be then & with a DTI on the follower checkit is midway through the peak lift. If not loosen vernier pulley & adjust cam so it is & then lockit tight again. It can also be done with a compression tester for true piston tdc afaik but angle guage is really needed as the figure for the cam needs to be known. (mine was 108'). Graham. petert 607 Posted May 31, 2006 Lift @ TDC method is by far the easiest method, if you have the data.
Guest ashnicholls Posted June 6, 2006 is a venier pully any use on an 8v, iv got an xu10 head thats been skimmed to raise compression to 9.5 - 10:1, will i need one. cheers
