Mi16 Running! Few Problems

Recommended Posts

Guest eddscruff

I have finally got my mi16 running which is cool. Just a few problems that i could do with a little help on.

First, i had the lift up reverse type gearbox on standard 205 and now have the 1.6 box with reverse behind 5th. 1 2 3 4 are ok but when i try to take ouy of 5th it doesn't spring to centre. I can also go straight from 5th to reverse. I have changed the clutch pedal and i have a GE eng quickshift.

After a few seconds or running the stop ligh slowly lights up on the dash at the same time as the little lights on the oil and water gauges.

Also i think its the no coolant light came on when i backed my car into work after dumping the coolant outside. Thought nothing of it but now its still on! even though its full!

Theres quite a bad knocking when i lift the clutch when in reverse, as if an engine mount is loose or something. Doesn't do it in 1st.

Help me please!

Edd

Glad its finally running Edd.

The lights etc sound like they could be wiring issues, a bad engine earth or sender connections.

I think the Be3 has a different gear linkage (the long rods length) but that shouldn't stop your gearlever from returning to the centre when its out of gear just I'm not sure what conrols that.

I've sorted the wiring now. I had the gauges and lights the wrong way round. Rev counter is sorted too thanks to m@tt.

Still struggling with the gearbox though! Do i need to change the gearstick for a press down for reverse type?

Don't know on the gearstick side but you never actually mentioned what was wrong with the rev counter. :D:)

swap the gearlinkages to the correct be3 1's

im not sure if the gearstick levers are different or not besides the lift up bit on the be1.

done many of these, it should not matter about what gear selector you are using, if your car has the lift up this will work with any box, the other way round is a problem,

if im totaly honest with you, was the box a known good one? as it sounds like the spring and detense in 5th gear in the box has had it!! as its the box and selectors, that control where the gearstick sits and returns too,

you can test this by removing the linkages, and you will find that the gearstick just flops about,

if you get a mate to move the gear leaver over towards fith gear while you look under the bonett, look to see wich way the selector arm moves in the box, when it is in fifth, try to move the selector (on the box) with your hand, if it jus moves easily, i would %100 say that the box is nackered, if its stiff then the linkage could be seized?

hope this helps :D jay

There isnt anything to stop you going from 5th to reverse on the be3, you dont have to push it down or pull anything up, you just pull the lever towards the back of the car. Dotn do this on the move or it makes a nasty noise.

Cheers for the replies chaps. I assumed that the gearbox was a good one as i bought it with the engine from a guy off here.

Theres nothing to stop me from going staright from 5th to reverse? that sounds weird! can't imagine that being too healthy.

As for the knocking when you lft the clutch in reverse I've found my exhaust rattles on either the heatshield or the rod from the gearstick as I start to move backwards. Is this the knocking you are getting?
