sam205gti 0 Posted May 26, 2006 When I start the car the idles are very low(so low that it kind of starts to chug), when coming to a traffic light I have to hold on the accelerator when I am stationary to stop it stalling. Once it has warmed up it is very steady and there are no problems. What are peoples opinions?

sam205gti 0 Posted May 26, 2006 Problems with the Supplementary Air Device (SAD), assuming this is an 8v engine. Yes it is an 8v engine, I guess I'll have a go at testing the SAD
feb 47 Posted May 26, 2006 I've got exactly the same problem here. Let us know how you get on. I will try to clean the SAD in the weekend.
gats15 0 Posted May 29, 2006 I had exactly the same problem two years ago. I spent money replacing the SAD and the air pipes, but it made no difference whatsoever. In the end i just turned the timing screw slightly to increase the rpm by 2-300 more on idle and to date ive never had the problem occur again. I still pass the MOT emissions tests as well, (dont know if it makes any difference). Unfortunatly in engines of that age, that loose power and may have small undetectable air leaks, it can be more than the SAD not working that contributes to the problem and just turning the timing screw slightly may do the trick without harming your engine. boldy205 75 Posted May 29, 2006 i had tha same thing with my 8v. take the SAD off and hold the shutter in the appature where it is with a small screw driver and slacken off the (i think 6mm) nut on the body of the SAD, now open the shutter slightly wider and nip the nut back up. this should hold the shutter open slightly more resulting in a higher warm up idle speed. remember to do it with the engine cold for a fair starting point, and that a small differance in the shutter opening makes a large differance to the idle. hope it helps. Normski 1 Posted June 28, 2006 Another thing to check is the manifold reference pipe to to fuel pressure regulator. I had idle problems on my Mi16 motor because of this. It would stall before it was fully up to temperature. Easy to check.
rickybiggs99 0 Posted June 29, 2006 Check the sad by starting the engine from cold and squeezing one of the pipes to the sad.If the revs drop your sad is working. If it's not working then the next step is to check the wiring going to it.I can't remember off the top of my head how you do it exactly but it tells you how in the haynes manual.
