Guest mitchtech Posted May 26, 2006 Hi Guys, After transplanting my recon 1.9 8v in to mmy car i have the charecteristic judders at any idle speed. I have replaced : AFM Rotor arm Dizzy cap Leads checked the TPS is working cleaned AFM and Throttle body etc.. Wanted to know if it could be that it is running too lean on idle revs as its ok under any amount of acceleration and can't flood the car if i try??? Don't really want to go down the FSE power boost valve road unless i have no choice to use this as a sticking plaster, but i have a gut feeling it will solve my probs. BTW the engine has an aftermarket cam port/pollished etc.. Any thoughts please guys. Regards, Mitch.
GLPoomobile 958 Posted May 26, 2006 What Cam is it? Not that I'm an expert, but from what I've read time and again if you have a lairy cam it will idle badly on the standard injection. You might need to turn your idle adjustment screw up to bring the idle speed up to around 1000rpm, maybe a bit more.
Guest mitchtech Posted May 26, 2006 Not sure what cam it is as the engine came from a donor car but had history with it of work but it don't say what brand the cam is. It dont just idle badly @ tickover it idles badly at any revs. Hence the juddering at any contant engine speed. Was wondering what the symtoms would be if i had the injector plugs muddled up? e.g 2 plugged into 4 etc...as i got oil on the cables that i had marked up before fitting so can't be 100% sure i got them correct. Also tried adjusting AFM mixture allen head and make no difference at all. Mitch.
Wurzel 16 Posted May 26, 2006 Ok, the 8v engine batch fires the injectors so any cable on any injector will make no difference (as long as they are all firing). The cam can cause idle problems but in your case, it will be standard. Kangarooing is a very common trait of the GTi, it's the most talked about problem ever The thing I'm not too sure of in your case though is the fact that you say it runs badly at any engine speed? What about 3000 rpm for instance, is it bad then? If so, then I reckon it will be an ignition fault somewhere and you need to do a search of 'misfiring'. If it's at slow speeds with low throttle opening, then it's kangarooing. Again, a search will highlight masses of info and potential cures. Unfortunately though, lots of thing add to the fault but no one thing cures it. Try cleaning out the air flow meter, breather pipes, throttle body. The main cause has been found to be the Air Flow Meter being worn though. Ensure that the throttle switch is set up correctly, this is another common fault. The list goes on I'm afraid, spend a couple of hours going through search threads first though
Guest mitchtech Posted May 26, 2006 thanks for the reply. i thought it was igniton but im not convinced since it dont misfire under acceletration, only runs lumpy when you level out the revs at any constant engine speed, tickover included. gonna give everything a cleanout tomorrow with carb cleaner and see how it goes.
