jacobs53 0 Posted May 25, 2006 I must have the worst luck in history!!!! now the gearbox is playing silly buggers! When first driving the car, especially when cold! The gears seem to difficult to engage, they don't crunch but do clunk into place, mostly noticable in 1st and 2nd gear but also noticable in every gear. When warmed up it sometimes happens, but not as often. I should mention that its also the same if the cars stationary or moving. I first thought the gear linkages might be incorrectly adjusted, but it seems tight and theres no play in the gear-lever. It might be the oil level, and im praying to god its this!!!!!! The gearbox is Be1 with lift up reverse, the haynes manual states that to re-fill you need to remove the reverse cable from the box??? can't I just fill it via the level plug? lee Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
Anthony 1,003 Posted May 25, 2006 If you haven't already done so, replace the gearbox oil with the correct grad stuff (75W80) and see if that improves matters. To be honest, alot of 205 gearboxes seem to be pretty stiff and clunky when cold but fine when hot, and it's something that I've always just lived with and they've done thousands of miles like it without further issue. Some of my previous cars it's been very hard to move the lever at all on the first 1st-2nd shift from cold in the middle of winter. Worth checking the clutch is properly disengaging, the gearbox isn't coming away from the engine, and that the engine mounts aren't shot to hell as these will all make changing gear much more difficult. Oh, and you can fill through the level plug if you wish just fine Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

richsmells 2 Posted May 26, 2006 (edited) Mine does this. But as long as i'm sympathetic with it, it's not too much trouble. It gets better when the gearbox oil is fresh so I have this changed fairly regularly. I think I recall Miles saying it was play in the selector shaft which causes it to be a bit sloppy. jacobs53 0 Posted May 26, 2006 Wow, what a difference new oil makes!!!! It is much smoother engaging the gears and is very tight. What a ball ache though replacing the gearbox oil, After 15 minutes of identifying the gearbox on the car (i knew it was a be1) i noticed it didn't have a level plug on 5th gear casing! and it had 2 drain plugs!!! so i drained out the oil, then tried to undo the cable from the top of the box! 28mm spanner!!!! only size i don't have, so went to shop and purchased! anyway to cut a very long story short, why hasn't mine got a level plug even though the car is 1989? lee Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
