More Problems!

Hi only owning my 205 for a week is proving costly!!!!!

Today I was driving down a national speed limit road, hitting 50 mph when i turned right (not a sharp corner at all) and the car felt like it was turning itself after id stopped turning!!! :) I thought this was a little weird so i jacked up the car and the wishbone ball joint is shot! (f***ing thing!) and when turning the wheel from side to side the shock absorbers are making a knocking noise (noise from top of shock)... is this the shock bearings? from the recipts I have it had new shocks in 2004 :)

so anybody know whats up with it?

yeah sounds like the top mount bearings, but these are totally separate to the shocks and probably weren't replaced when the shocks were, unless you have receipts that say otherwise.

There is a flat bearing up there as well as the rubber donut. You can get them separately or as a kit at GSF. The bearing on it's own is listed for a Citroen Berlingo I think.

Thats what I thought originally, but there is a bearing (its a flat disc shaped thing) and a rubber bush. Either could be causing your problem.

Slightly off-topic but I've read a lot of these topics regarding recently bought cars, (and this applies to everyone on this forum and is not meant as a slight to Jacobs53) that even the last of the GTi's are pushing 13 years old now. They were never designed nor built to last more than 7-8 years. If you get one, budget on replacing the ENTIRE drivetrain/suspension/brake system. Everything will fail in time and sooner rather then later.

I'll second that.

New shocks, springs, top mounts, drop links, rear beam rebuild, new bushes front and rear are going to be needed if the car hasn't already been 'refreshed'.

Plus there is NO point in driving a 205 GTI with shot suspension

also make sure it is just the ball joint on the bottom arm that is shot. mine egg shaped the bottom of the hub too!!

Yeah, I've replaced absolutley everything on mine bar the shocks, which will have to wait untill I can afford soem good ones. It's not that expensive if you can do most of it yourself. OK, so I did salvage the rebuilt beam from my 1.9 which saved a lot of money, but to replace stuff like bushes, top mount bearing etc really doesn;t cost a lot and is not that difficult if you have the tools.

this might be a good thread to fire up one of those lists of things to be checking for

to start off with, when looking for problems in the front suspension/steering, things to consider might include :

tyre condition/pressure

wheel condition

engine mounts

subframe mounts

driveshafts (inc cv joints)

bottom arms (both inner bushes and balljoint)

steering rack/column and track rod ends - and tracking!

dampers/springs, rubbers and bearings

anti roll bar, bushes and clamp mountings

drop links

wheel bearings

warped/cracked discs

knackered capiler sliders

i'm sure there's more others can add

how about a list of the rear components to be checking as well?

well at the present, it has a recon rear beam, new shocks, new tyres and thats about it

Il check the hub locating hole when i replace the wishbone, and damper bearings

If the topmounts are knocking/creaking when the wheel is turning it's very likely to be the bearing. When Anthony fitted new shocks to my car, I replaced the rubber doughnuts but forgot the bearings. The whole topmount kit is available from pug for about £40 and for that you get shiny new metal topmounts, flat bearings and rubbers.

But you can just replace the rubbers and bearings for very little. I believe mine had been replaced at some point as the bearnings were okay and hadn't disintegrated but I think I will replace them as i've almost replaced everything else!

Just loosen the castleated nut off under the bonnet but don't remove it. Remove strut from hub and remove three nuts from topmount. Remove strut/spring from wheel arch. Attach spring compressors, compress spring. Remove castleated nut and the topmount should fall off, try to remember what order the bits of the topmount go together. Refitting is reverse of removal.

I agree with all of that 100% except for shocks. I've only seen one knackered 205 shock ever and it must have been damaged I reckon. The only way to prove this though is to change everything on a 205 except for the shocks, which not very many people do.
