Trouble Starting My 205 1.9 Gti

Recommended Posts

Guest Scottish Scooby

Hi all.

Im new on here.

I have just recently bought a 'G' Reg 205 1.9 GTi. It is a Graphite Gray like colour with the big sunroof.

I dont know much about these cars and am after some more model details.

I'm also after some technological help.

I'm having some problems getting it started due to an apparent electrical problem. I need to move it ASAP from its current location. The interior light comes on as does the windscreen wipers even when they are turned off. My mate who knows about cars says it must be an electrical fault. We tried starting it up with jump leads but it started to drain my mates car causing it too stall!

Because I couldn't get the original key to fit the ignition barrel, My mate stripped it out and we tried to hot wire it to get it out of its current location. Would this have anything to do with it not starting? I'm going to a local scrap yard tomorrow to try to get another ignition barrel and key.

I've never driven a 205 GTi before, but am really looking forward to it.

It has 99,700 miles on it. Is this ok for this kind of car? It is in mint condition.

Im also after a bootlid and rear drivers side tail lens for it.

Any help and advice would be very much appreciated.

I'm also looking forward to posting on here.

Many thanks,

Ewan.

1) try a search. 205s commonly have starting problems where the starter motor will not turn.

2) If things are coming on without switching them on then you have potentially big electrical issues or it could just be a buggered switch (although unlikely). I'd have a good look and see if someone has been hacking the electrics as these are not normal issues. However, I guess they aren't your major concern at the moment.

3) You are not about to get advice on how to hot wire one on open forum! Not that we don't know how to but it isn't a very sensible thing to be posting.

Try explaining what is/isn't happening. E.g. is it turning over, do you have a spark?, etc

It just doesn't seem to be trying to start at all. It was draining my friends car alot when we tried to jump start. We had no choice but to try to hot wire it and I was only supplied with one key that fits the doors, but not the ignition barrel!

OK, check out threads on starter solenoid problems. There is a common problem realting to these that stops the start motor from running. There are many many threads on the subject!

Well I got a new ignition barrel from the local scrappys and put it in. It worked fine for a while until I went over a speed bump, and it cut out. Cant get it started again. Its turning over, but it just doesn't seem to catch to start. Its not the starter motor or battery. It has fuel in it as well. Dont know what it could be. We tried bump starting it and jump starting it, but to no avail.

Any ideas anybody?

Check the connections to your coil. Some are bodged up. Or just get a new one and re-wire it (only about £15)

I had this happen to mine. It would start every now and then, and sometimes when driving it would cut out.

Turned out to be a crack on the cap of it.

First check to see if you have a spark. If not then Matt may well be right, I too have had a car cut due to poor coil connections...
