Exhaust Downpipe Resting On Bulkhead Seam

Recommended Posts

Dixon

Where my gti6 manifold connects to the downpipe on the 205, the flange is resting against the bulkhead seam.

I did give it a bashing before the engine went in which I thought would be enough, but obviously not!

At certain revs I can feel it vibrate through the car, which isn't too much of an annoyance because the thing rattles and vibrates like mad anyway. But my concern is the bulkhead seam getting too hot?

Is it possible to get too hot or set fire on a long journey or anything like that?

My initial worry is FCS this weekend and the 2+ drive to get there then 4 hours of track time!

I'm going to try and find a long term fix for this but would anyone advise for the time being to wrap the section in exhaust wrap or anything like that?

I wouldn't worry about the heat. My bulkhead was exposed to the direct heat of a turbo and all it did was melt the paint over time and let rust set in. Can't imagine that much bashing against the bulkhead can be doing it any good though.

I'm suprised the vibration doesn't get on your tits. My exhaust rattled against a bolt under the car for about 3 minutes before I returned home and got the angle grinder out :D

Bashing the bulkhead isn't the best idea but unfortunately, sometimes the only thing that can be done within a budget. As said, heat shouldn't be too much of a problem, it depends on what is resting on the other side of the bulk head (wires, soundproofing etc) that may not like the heat too much. I take it you've got rid of the heat shield?

even on a budget I'd rather tilt the engine than attack the shell.

Bash the bulkhead he he. I used a bar and levered the lip back onthe bulkhead. Fitted a solid lower mount and the few times ive had it idling on the drive it hasnt rattled but do realise this doesnt mean it wont rattle and bang on full chat!

But then budget means budget in my book!

Well I opted for bashing as its a track car so wasn't worried about aesthetics etc and I did look at extending the lower mount about 10 to 15mm but that would have caused issues with the front of the engine then catching.

The metal heat shield is still in place on the bulkhead but stops before the seam.

There is nothing on the other side of the tunnel as the car is stripped although I do have a few lines runing down it (braided brake, fire extinguisher and power)

Will see how it goes at the weekend then and look into it after when I have more time.
