Which 309 Shafts For 1.6 Hubs

Recommended Posts

shepherdfte

Hi - I'm about to fit 309 wishbones to my 205 1.6gti. I'm retaining my 1.6 hubs ('cause the brakes etc are brand new throughout with TARoX disks and new callipers etc etc), so I guess I need shafts off a 309 that is NOT at 1.9? So off the diesel say, or the SRi?

Which ones had 1.6 hubs? Or rather, did any have the 1.9 types hubs except the GTi 1.9?

Don't want to buy the wrong shafts....!

thanks

Andy

AFAIK all the XU/XUD 309's have 1.9 type hubs...

I would say an SRI as I think it was basically a 1.6 GTI version. I assume shafts will be the same length despite the difference in wishbone type

Thanks. When you say the same length, you mean the various shafts on the 309 I assume, not the shafts fitted to the 205? I guess also the 1.6 309 has the same wishbones as the 1.9 309, with only the lesser models having the combined wishbone/anti roll bar set-up?

All 309's with XU engines, petrol or diesel have the same size driveshaft ends so 1.9 hubs are needed afaik.

The 1.3/4 engined 309's might have smaller but I've never looked at one.

The only 309's I know of thast have the GTi lower wishbones are the GTi & TD engied ones. My old SRi had base model style ARB & wishbones.

Oh carp. So the 309 wishbone mod is strictly for cars with 1.9 style hubs only?

Well, you could run 309 wishbones with 1.6 'shafts, but the potential for pop-out issues on full lock is there...

Personally, I'd use 1.9 hubs and disks, and if you really want to you can use your new 1.6 calipers and pads on these hubs. That way you save some of your new brake system and you can run 309 driveshafts as you'll have the correct hubs.
