Batfink 201 Posted May 23, 2006 My friend has an Astra mk5. Well the model before the newest When driven there is a thud thud thud noise that increases speed as the car is driven faster A garage has looked at it and they have said its not the driveshafts or the wheelbearings I have given the driveshafts a shake and they seem solid I changed the brakes as the garage said it was warped disks but this did not help, i have also swapped the front wheels to the back and the noise still eminates from the front. Anyone got any ideas??
methebmxer 0 Posted May 23, 2006 Hiya, I drive an astra at the moment while doing an engine swap in my 205 and I had the very same problem. I used the car like this for months as I was trying to avoid spending money on it but it got worse to the point that you could feel vibration through the dash and pedals and if I went faster than 50mph it sounded like a machine gun being fired under the bonnet!. So I finally got somebody to take a look at it and found it was just a wheel bearing. It cost about £45 to get sorted and now all is calm. It did ease up when turning one way and then it got worse when going the other so if she has this symptom I would say it was the same problem.
Batfink 201 Posted May 23, 2006 the guy at the garage said that wheelbearings tend to squeal constantly rather than thud thud Was he talking bollocks then? Wouldnt surprise.....
methebmxer 0 Posted May 24, 2006 Haha yeah I seem to have bad luck with wheel bearings and the first person garage I took my astra to told me that it was'nt the bearings too. Looks like we have uncovered an astra wheel bearing shortage crisis and they are avoiding changing them at all costs!
