Guest rick03054 Posted May 23, 2006 Should the exhaust manifold studs be replaced as a matter of course, just if they look shot, or if they come out with the nuts? Don't want a blowing manifold but don't want to risk a snapped stud unnecessarily either!
mbayley77 0 Posted May 23, 2006 I have never worried about this before and just put them back as they came out with no troubles. On my gti-6 engine rebuild recently though I did replace them just to keep everything fresh. Didnt cost alot from pug and look all nice and shiny. Oh and the nuts are copper i believe. frodo_monkey 0 Posted May 23, 2006 Yeah they are copper. Was a real p*sser when one of mine snapped off in the head (you need a really wonky drill to get in there), so for the couple of quid I got mine for from Autofive, I'd say replace them to save a lot of hassle later! Guest rick03054 Posted May 23, 2006 I've got the manifold off, 3 of the studs came out with the nuts attached and the rest stayed in the head. I'm basicaly wondering if it's worth taking them all out but risking one or more snapping. Might just replace the ones that came out and all the nuts. hengti 2 Posted May 23, 2006 i'd reuse them providing the threads are ok - just need to be careful not to be too over enthusiastic when tightening them back up good idea to check that all the others are actually tight too
