Few Problems With The 205 Id Like To Sort Out

Recommended Posts

jacobs53

After owning the 205 for a about a week id like to improve the drivability of the car.

1) Obatining a steady idle :)

2) Making the gear change more precise (very sloppy, and notcy)

3) improving the (probabily get shot for saying this) MPG!

I understand that hunting when idling is normal for a 205, but I'm sure i read a hilw ago that the AFM could be re-tracked to improve the problem, also the gear change is lazy! and sometimes is difficult to get into gear, I know the gear stick is like sturring a pudding! so maybe the linkages?

Also the MPG! Im used to getting 100 miles from £10'w worth of petrol! so i assumed old injection system etc... maybe 85 miles was possible, but it seems 70 miles is about the limit!!! which is shocking! anyone know how to improve this?

cheers lee

1) Take off and clean out all the breather hoses, every single one. While your at it you may as well clean out the SAD as well and check its operating properly/smoothly. Also give the TB a bloody good clean, including the idle scew (take out and clean as well as cleaning the hole it screws into.

Youll be surprised at the difference it makes, its a bit of a pain and a dirty job normally but well worth it. Took me about 2hrs to do it all properly and put back together on the CTI but made the idle and cold starts miles better.

2) Try tightening up the gear linkages ans greasing them as well.

3) 70 miles per tenner is about 350 miles per tank (50 litres) so works out at about 32mpg. Id say thats a little on the low side, I used to get 35 out of the 1.9 with varied driving (town, backroads, motorway and not usually hanging about) so id expect a little more from a 1.6 but not necessarily alot more (not sure on the average for a 1.6)

Retracking the AFM may not be a bad idea but Id suggest seeing what the mog is like after giving all the breathers/TB a good clean out first to see if it gets any better.

as said for lumpy idle, as for gear change deffinatly tighten up the linkages, mine was like custard in bucket until i tighten it up, also, the pivot bolt came out last week which i cleaned up and reinstalled, the change from second to third is now noticeably shorter?!

average mpg for a 1.6 (around town) im getting 29-30. around 300miles a full tank.

With the lumpy idle, as well as cleaning the pipework, have a look to see if either you or a previous owner has tightened up the jubilee clips too tight around either end of the air flow meter.. as this can lead to the thin walled plastic becomming distorted, and hence a gap appearing. this gap, no matter how small can relate to the lumpy idle problem by introducing unmetered air into the system.... and the ecu gets confused with this.. leading the air/ fuel ratio to get messed up.... and i'm sure smeone will she more light on it.. but it makes the air flap 'pulse', for want of a better word, and that is a contributary factor to the 500rpm - 1200rpm idle.

a new set of gear rods, if you are doing it on a budget, just the 12" one and the 4" one will tighten up the slack that you have.

The best I have had out of my 1.9 is 30mpg on a long run to Scotland. It has been as low as 18mpg when I first got it and the high pressure fuel valve that had been fitted by a previous owner was set too rich.

I just looked in my peugeot handbook and the 1.6 is stated as 31.3MPG and the 1.9 as 29.9MPG.... so i guess 75 miles for a tenner is around about right.... gulp!!!!

But just look at it! :D
