Lower Steering Column-power Steering

Recommended Posts

KaspaCti

Hi

I've just picked up a second hand PAS setup of ebay to convert my 1987 CTi to lazy man steering. Unfortunately the setup didn't include the lower steering column and the car has since been turned into a peugeot cube :( . I phoned my local peugeot dealer who quoted £127 !! :) Just wondering if anyone had any ideas where I could get one from cheaply either new or second hand. The local breakers round my way never seem to be breaking any 205's or 309's. I have done a search (how I found out lower column was different for PAS) but couldn't see what I was after. Apologies if It's been covered before and I've missed it.

Cheers

Sean

it took me a good few weeks to find one for mine as i butchered my old one(long story) anyway in the end i just emailed everyone on ebay breaking 205gti 205 diesels or 309gti and i eventually got one for a tenner

i also phoned about 20 scrappies with no luck :)

i even put a wanted on part breaker sites but had no luck

i reckon ebay maybe your best bet

I think it was Euro Car Parts that used to sell them fairly cheaply new, but your cheapest/easiest way is to just goto a scrappy and find a 205/309 with PAS and liberate it....

Thought it might be difficult to get hold of one for a reasonable price! Thanks for the suggestion. Ebay is a good idea. I'll have a look tonight. And there was me thinking I'd been really clever getting a 'complete' PAS setup for £50. Oh well.

Thanks again

I'll give them a ring and see if they are still doing them. Otherwise looks like Ebay as suggested by M@tt.

Thanks again

I put pas on my phase 1 cti many moons ago, and the bottom steering column was to short. Something worth checking and getting peoples opinion on.

Hi Vern

Ooh you've chucked a spanner in the works now  Thought I'd got the lower steering column thing straight in my head. I haven't started to fit the pas yet so haven't had a proper look yet.

As I understood it the non pas lower column is too long for the pas rack because of the extra height of the rack. Is this right?

When you say the one you had was too short, was that a pas lower steering column that you were fitting or the original lower column that was already on the car? Can you remember how you got around the problem?

Any help much appreciated

Many thanks

Sean

p.s. Think I'll have to have a bit of a sit down now as I'm proper confused :(

fitted pas to a 87 cti last year no probs with lower column from doner car but this was a "bitsa" car! don't know where the parts came from originally.

This car is now being broken and I'm undecided wether to use the pas rack again......

Just checked parts site, there are 2 types of lower shaft listed for pre 91 and 2t ypes for 91 on. Don't the phase 1 have a different connection on the rack, square as opposed to round or something like that.

I just ran with the short shaft but would not recommend it as very dangerous, it was very easy to force it apart, especially now you have the forum as a source of info, that whas not around when i did it (1991).

Vern,

Cheers for having a look at the parts site.

I think the manual racks are round on the earlier cars and square / flat on the later ones. But I thought all the power steering racks were the same connection regardless of age? I'm probably hopelessly wrong on that! Anyone got a definitive answer?

I think I'll probably have to do it by trial and error and just get hold of a lower column and see how well it fits. As I'm likely to be getting second hand I probably won't be able to tell which one I'm getting,( unless they're stamped with part number?) Take your point on the safety issue though, don't fancy wiping myself or anybody else out.

Thanks again

Sean

From a 309 gti can you use just the bottom part of the column or do you have to change over the whole lot? When I looked at one it seemed totally different???
