Not Sure If This Head Will Fir My 1.6 8v

OK, this is going to be a long one :(

I salvaged a load of parts from my old 1.9 before scrapping it. As my 1.6 is smoking badly (and I'm hoping it's not the rings) I was planning on cleaning up my spare 1.9 head, fitting new seals ect and swapping that onto the 1.6 (will swap over the 1.6 cam so it stays true to form). This I know is straight forward and do-able.

But now I'm wondering if what I have is actually a normal 1.9 GTi head :)

The 1.9 had a funny gearbox with a V long 5th gear. I was told it was because one of the previous owners did silly motorway miles so he probably put a 405 T Diesel box on it for cruising. I thought nothing more of this. When I came to scrapping the car - a J reg - I noticed it had an earlier style belt tensioner and realised it must have had an engine swap, which made sense as it ran and pulled well despite knocking on 160k. I remember the engine code was something like D6 something.

As I just read somewhere about the 405 SRi engine having a similar code and the head being of a downdraught type I'm concerned whether I can use this head. It had a normal GTi inlet manifold which I know the downdraught one doesn't.

Is there anything I can look for to verify what sort of head I have?

well a 450 sri head has round inlet ports that point at an angle upwards where as 205/309 gti heads have square inlet ports which point forwards.

have a look on the bk of the cyl head. there should be a date stamped on it which would roughly tell you if it was the original head or from an earlier car.

From memory your black car had a standard 1.9 engine in it, not a 405 SRi engine (which has a very different looking inlet manifold)

Cool.

The engine code was definately D6 something, maybe D6B. I'm not clued up on the GTi engine codes so any idea? Actually, sod it, I'll stop being a lazy git and do a search!

D6B is a 1.9 205/309 gti engine.

1.6 is B6D

Yeah, i did a bit of research after you left and it looks like its a D2D block with gti crank, rods and pistons. Missing the spacer plate though. Shame they arn't the flat top pistons for some increase in CR.
