Jrod 7 Posted May 22, 2006 Hi I had my car inspected by the DVLA today as I am trying to put my private plate onto it. They could not find anywhere the chassis had been stamped, they found the plate but said the chassis has to of been stamped also. I have 28 Days or they are going to Q plate the car..... Does anyone know where else it could be?!
danpug 1 Posted May 22, 2006 Isn't it along the top part of the bulkhead? Not very far from the plate actually. Its been rusted away on two of the 205's i've had though.
Guest cknotty Posted May 22, 2006 Isn't it along the top part of the bulkhead? Not very far from the plate actually. Its been rusted away on two of the 205's i've had though. Yep, on the scuttle crossmember above and slightly to the right of (looking towards the front of the car) the identification plate. Mine's corroded beyond recognition too
Jrod 7 Posted May 22, 2006 Nope it's not there! The whole beam looks mint, not an ounce of rust on it... Looks like it was never there.
danpug 1 Posted May 22, 2006 Sounds a bit dodgey, unless they were in other places on some 205's, i've had six now and they've all been in that same place.
Guest cknotty Posted May 22, 2006 Does sound dodgy indeed: ground down and painted over perhaps? Not sure if they stamped the chassis number on other parts of the bodyshell: if they did, might mean having to take bits of carpet out etc...
danpug 1 Posted May 22, 2006 I've stripped a couple now and never noticed it anywhere else but i could be wrong.
Jrod 7 Posted May 22, 2006 Theres no sign of it being there, not even any marks underneath. That says it may be at the rear... but where?!?!
Phil H 16 Posted May 22, 2006 Feel underneath the lip of the scuttle panel to feel for filler / weld. It should be stamped just in front of the master cylinder.
Jrod 7 Posted May 22, 2006 There is no trace of filler or weld, even the dvla inspectors said so, I don't think it has ever been stamped there on my car. Is there another one anywhere else?
danpug 1 Posted May 22, 2006 Just checked mine on the rear area on your diagram and can't find anything anywhere. The code on the crossmember could be very easily covered with paint i reckon as its only very lightly stamped on anyway.
Jrod 7 Posted May 22, 2006 I checked on my friends phase 1 and it was on the beam, stamped pretty deep. I even rubbed down the beam to check if there was a number under the paint but nothing...
jeremy 71 Posted May 23, 2006 Have you tried contacting any of the previous owners to find out any history of the car as this may give an explanation.
Grim.Badger 15 Posted May 23, 2006 No other suggestions? I heard a long time ago that all cars past a certain date have to have their chasis number on them twice to prevent people glueing two cars together in the middle. I'd check around the rear arches (inside), and the gap between the inside and outside panel on the rear. It's got to be somewhere obscure, if it exists, otherwise someone on here would have been able to tell you where it is. Sorry if that's not much help
jonah 1 Posted May 23, 2006 No other suggestions? Stamp it yourself, then take it to a different inspector?
Jrod 7 Posted May 23, 2006 I have looked around the arches but can't seem to find it. Am going to strip the car at the weekend, seats carpets etc. If I can't find it I was considering stamping it under the carpet then having the inspectors see it but that could be dodgy... dead205 0 Posted May 24, 2006 My G-reg had no signs of a stamp until i got a light and mirror out. Used them to look under the beam and found where some git had cut the vin number out and replated back over the top. It looked perfect from above too!
Jrod 7 Posted May 24, 2006 DVLA didn't pick up on it when they had their mirrors and torches out... Fingers crossed the recipet for the shell I'm getting should be enough to prove it's a new shell and thus why it wasn't stamped.

Fingers crossed the recipet for the shell I'm getting should be enough to prove it's a new shell and thus why it wasn't stamped. Probably what your shell is as well, its been re-shelled at some point with a brand new shell but with some details from another car to build it up (probably a written off third party only insured car). I think its still possible to get the reg, if you can prove the parts you've used from the donor vehicle are on that car, its not just the chassis. A certain amount of points means it can be then registered as that vehicle (or something along those lines, its been a long time since i have read up about it).
