Bx Gti 8v Cam?

Recommended Posts

I am looking for a relatively cheap thing to do to me car for an increase in power. i know the gains on a 19 gti engine are minimal as they have quite an agressive cam already but is this the case on the bx gti engine also? would i get a nice gain from a new fast road cam?

regards michael

Its my understanding the the bx gti is the same as the 205 gti engine so tbh just fitting a cam to a standard engine will be a bit pointless. It would be much more beneficial if you get some good headwork, 3 angle seats, ported etc and then fit a cam and you will see gains. But the Kent fast road cam (pt36) and piper 270 have very similar figures to standard so are a bit pointless, best at looking at other options.

it's not - the bx gti engine is the D6D 405 SRi engine (125hp/downdraught ports etc) - not sure if the gti cam will work cos the pistons are different but I stand to be corrected on that.

The cam fits the head, but it may be worth checking the valve - piston clearance as Dave says, although, I think it should be fine on anything but the most wild profiles.

you will see gains just by swapping the cam, particularly in the SRi as it is far milder than the GTi cam. A cheap upgrade to the Sri engien would be the standard 1.9 GTi cam, which can probably had on here for £5 or £10!

But, as James said, you won't be makiing the most of the cam unless you up the compression ratio, which involves taking the head off, at which point, you might as well get the valve seats re-cut and the ports tidied up!

If the BX engine is the same as the SRi, look at the recent thread about downdraft heads for an idea of how to squeeze a little more power out of it!
