whats best...taking all the wiring off the engine, and ill tag it all, or taking out from the dash?

reason i ask is im baffled by the stuff under the dashboard...do i need to take the whole dash off?

Unplug the connectors from the engine if you're swapping the engine for another of the same type. You need to partly remove the dash to remove the engine loom intact from inside the car, so you only want to do that if you're installing an Mi16 or something.

If you are just removing the engine then disconnect it at the brown multi plug or if you don't have one you'll have to mark them up & pull them out of the way.

When I removed the 8v ecu loom from my car I loosened the dash on the drivers side & the main centre mounting (phase2 dash btw) so I could get the ecu plug out over the steering column.

Depnding on the age of your car the looms for the guage senders, ignition amp & coil should be in the brown multiplugs near the heater matrix.

The wiring for the guages, starter & alternator can be seperated at the brown multiplug in the engine bay & then you can transfer the engine side of the loom over to the new engine off the car.

Couldn't agree more if same type of engine going back in. But avoid my mistake-don't use anything to label the wires that an oily fingerprint will destroy! I used masking tape- written on with biro,by the time i put the engine back in I couldn't read a thing! Theres not too many wires that can be confused though due to different plugs. A digital photo pre-removal may help too
