Pas - Removing The Power Assistance Bit.

Recommended Posts

Higgy

Hi,

I picked-up a PAS rack at the weekend and plan to fit it into my 205 minus the power assistance.

Could someone tell me what size of bolts they used to block-up the 4 power steering fluid holes. They seem to be a tapered thread probably imperial.

Also my gaiters are worse for wear. Could you tell me what comes with the gaiter kit from Euro Parts/GSF etc. I need to replace: 12 , 13 & 14

Cheers,

Higgy.

No idea what comes with the gaitor kit I'm afraid, but I reckon it might be a extendable gaitor and a couple of clips, maybe some grease if you're lucky. Best thing is to phone them up and ask I guess.

When I removed the power steering pipes from my car, I didn't bother with blocking the holes up. Maybe you could find some rubber grommets that fit and press them in.

I haven't blocked mine either yet. Couldn't find any correct sized bolts.

What I did was leave the metal ps pipes coming out the rack about 10mm and flattend the ends down.

I tried a load of pipe fittings I borrowed from work.

1/4" NPT fits the larger holes on the rack.

For the slightly smaller holes 1/4" does not fit, or 1/8"

The hunt continues.

Yep.

If your car has PAS now, then I would also remove the belt going to the PAS pump and remove the ram at the back of the rack.

The ram is dead easy to remove, 1 nut and a TORX (i think) bolt. An allen key also fits if you have no TORX bits.

I've a couple of 1/4" NPT blanks I am going to fit into the larger holes tonight, then all I have to do is find out the size of the smaller holes in the rack (your left with 4 holes to plug).

That will definately fail an MOT though, or certainly will do if noticed (power steering U/S). Either keep the PAS setup working and complete, or completely remove it.

I blocked mine up with silicone sealer.

Remember officially this mod will not pass the MOT as it is classed as PAS not working correctly. So keep it nice and stealth

I blocked mine up with various bolts. Just took the whole rack to a bolts and nuts specialist shop.

I welded the hole in the fitting/bolt up with my mig, then just screwed them back in.

I blocked the holes with silicone & cut the stud off from the end where the nut was holding the ram.

The concertina gaitors might be easy enough to get (universal ones might do) but I reckon the small one that has the metal ring slid on to the end of the rack will be difficult to get hold of.

I'm sure I got that in a kit from GSF.

I went for a kit from Partco, only to find it was not the right kit. It looked similar but for example the little rubber cup thing did not have the metal ring in it, so you could not keep it in place on the rack.

In the end I went to Peugeot and got the two gaiters I needed. Cost about £10.

Higgy.

Hint: The tube dia. of an axle stand was just the right dia. to use for knocking the rubber cup with metal ring onto the rack. It gets it on nice and square.

Anyone know if you can take a power steering rack and replace part 3 in the diagram with the part off a non-power rack?

Would be a whole lot better than running a rack with holes blocked/sealed/etc.

I've wondered that and do have both racks still, maybe I should investigate!

I wouldnt have thought so due to the difference in height. You'd need the pinion to match the rack so you couldnt just change the casing either.

I took that part off my PAS rack when I was removing it from my old diesel to save dropping the subframe (I had axle stands underneath it) & I'm fairly sure that it can't be swapped over.

Its half of the steering gear that makes the PAS rack quicker & probably wouldn't mesh correctly with the non PAS innards imo.

Graham.
